Abhinav Bindra Named Second Vice Chair of IOC Athletes Commission
India's Olympic gold medallist shooter Abhinav Bindra has been elected as the second Vice Chair of the International Olympic Committee's (IOC) Athletes Commission. This new role adds another significant achievement to his distinguished career. Bindra, who won gold in the 2008 Beijing Games in the 10m air rifle event, expressed his dedication to advocating for athletes' interests globally.

Bindra's Commitment to Athletes
After his election, Bindra stated on X, "Honoured to be elected as the Second Vice Chair of the IOC Athletes Commission. I'm committed to serving in the best interests of athletes worldwide and ensuring their voices are heard." His appointment to the Athletes Commission came in 2018, marking another milestone for India's first individual Olympic gold medallist.
The IOC announced that following the election of four new members by athletes competing at Paris 2024, the revamped Athletes Commission convened to elect its Chair and Vice-Chairs. Emma Terho, a Finnish ice-hockey player, was re-elected as Chair, while Maja Włoszczowska from Poland and Bindra were chosen as Vice Chairs. All three will serve until the Winter Olympics in 2026.
Role of the Athletes Commission
The Athletes Commission is crucial within the Olympic Movement, representing athletes' voices within the IOC and beyond. It consists of up to 23 members, with 12 elected during the Summer and Winter Games and up to 11 appointed members to ensure gender, regional, and sport balance. The Chair of this Commission also sits on the IOC Executive Board, influencing top-level decisions.
Emma Terho has a notable background as a five-time Olympian and former captain of Finland's women's ice hockey team. She led her team to bronze medals at both Nagano 1998 and Vancouver 2010 Winter Games. Terho was initially elected to the Athletes Commission at Pyeongchang 2018 and later re-elected as Chair during Tokyo 2020 and Beijing 2022 Winter Games.
Significance of Bindra's Election
Bindra's election highlights his ongoing commitment to sports and athlete representation. His role will involve working closely with other members to ensure athletes' concerns are addressed at the highest levels of decision-making within the IOC. This position allows him to continue contributing significantly to global sports governance.
The IOC statement emphasised that "the new-look Commission met today for the first time to elect its Chair and Vice-Chairs," underscoring the importance of these roles in shaping future policies and initiatives for athletes worldwide. Bindra's experience and dedication are expected to bring valuable insights into this influential body.
In summary, Abhinav Bindra's election as the second Vice Chair of the IOC Athletes Commission marks a significant step in his career. His commitment to advocating for athletes' interests aligns with the Commission's goals of representing sportspersons globally. This role will enable him to influence key decisions within the Olympic Movement until at least 2026.
