Abhinav Bindra Receives Olympic Order for Distinguished Contributions
Indian shooting legend Abhinav Bindra received the prestigious Olympic Order on Saturday, recognising his significant contributions to the Olympic movement. The International Olympic Committee (IOC) conferred this honour during its 142nd Session. Bindra made history as India's first individual Olympic gold medallist at the 2008 Beijing Games, winning in the 10m air rifle event.

Bindra's Olympic Journey
Bindra's Olympic journey began at the Sydney 2000 Games, and he competed in five editions of the Summer Games. He first made a notable impact at Athens 2004 by reaching the final of the men's 10m air rifle. His crowning achievement came in Beijing 2008, where he defeated defending champion Zhu Qinan of China to clinch the gold medal.
The Olympic Order, established in 1975, is the highest accolade within the Olympic Movement. It honours individuals for their distinguished contributions to the Olympic cause. Bindra's dedication to the sport and his post-athletic efforts have earned him this esteemed recognition.
Inspiration and Dedication
Reflecting on his journey, Bindra said, "When I was a young boy, it was these Olympic rings which gave meaning to my life." He added that pursuing his Olympic dream for over two decades was a privilege and that contributing back to the Olympic Movement post his athletic career has been a great passion.
Bindra's involvement with the IOC extends beyond his competitive years. Since 2018, he has been a part of the IOC Athletes Commission and currently serves as its vice chair. This role allows him to continue influencing and contributing to the Olympic Movement.
Future Aspirations
The 41-year-old expressed that receiving the Olympic Order will motivate him to work even harder for the Olympic Movement. "It has been a privilege and an honour," he stated, underscoring his commitment to furthering the values and goals of the Olympics.
At Rio 2016, Bindra once again showcased his talent by reaching the final in his event, although he narrowly missed a podium finish, placing fourth. His consistent performances across multiple Olympics highlight his dedication and skill in shooting sports.
Bindra's recognition with the Olympic Order not only celebrates his past achievements but also sets a benchmark for future athletes. His journey from a young boy inspired by the Olympic rings to an honoured contributor to the movement exemplifies dedication and passion for sportsmanship.
Abhinav Bindra's legacy continues to inspire many in India and around the world. His contributions both on and off the field have significantly impacted the Olympic Movement, making him a revered figure in sports history.
