Teen Golf Prodigy Miles Russell to Compete in PGA Tour's Rocket Mortgage Classic
AP Miles Russell, a prodigious 15-year-old golfer from Florida, has made headlines by becoming the youngest player to make a cut in Korn Ferry Tour history. His remarkable achievement has led to an exciting opportunity: a sponsor exemption to participate in his PGA Tour debut at the Rocket Mortgage Classic. Russell expressed his enthusiasm and determination, stating, "Ever since I first started playing golf, my dream has been to compete on the PGA Tour and test my game against the best players. I'm looking forward to making the most of the experience later this month."

Rickie Fowler is set to defend his title at the Rocket Mortgage Classic, which will take place at the Detroit Golf Club starting June 27. Russell's journey to this point included shooting a 5-under 66 in April at the Lecom Suncoast Classic in Longwood, Florida. This performance on the PGA Tour's developmental circuit highlighted his potential and skill at a young age. The high school freshman, who has been taking online classes since the eighth grade, hails from Jacksonville Beach.
Russell was named the American Junior Golf Association player of the year in 2023. His impressive season included a seven-shot victory in the Junior PGA Championship and becoming the youngest winner of the Junior Players Championship. These achievements have not only showcased his talent but also his readiness to compete at higher levels.
Looking ahead, Russell is expected to return to the Detroit area in July to compete at the U.S. Amateur at Oakland Hills Country Club. Jason Langwell, Executive Director of the Rocket Mortgage Classic, praised Russell's accomplishments and expressed excitement about seeing him compete alongside some of the world's best golfers at Detroit Golf Club.
Earlier this year, Russell nearly made it into a PGA Tour event before losing in a playoff in a Monday qualifier for the Puerto Rico Open. This near-miss did not deter him but rather fueled his determination to reach greater heights in his golfing career.
It's noteworthy that Guan Tianlang of China holds the record as the youngest player to make the cut in a PGA Tour-sanctioned event. He was just 14 when he achieved this milestone at the 2013 Masters, playing as the Asia-Pacific Amateur champion. Russell's recent accomplishments signal a promising future and potentially more records to be broken as he continues his journey in professional golf.
