Pune: Huge 'Meow Meow' Drug Haul Worth Rs 3,000 Crore Uncovered - What Is This Drug?
In a significant operation, about 1,700 kg of synthetic stimulant drug Mephedrone, popularly known as Meow Meow, has been seized by the police following raids conducted at multiple locations across Pune and New Delhi.
The value of the seized contraband is estimated to be around Rs 3,000 crore. So far, a total of five individuals have been arrested in connection with what is being described as one of India's largest-ever drug hauls.

Preceding Incidents
This is not the first instance of a substantial quantity of Mephedrone being recovered in Maharashtra. In a related development last year, law enforcement agencies in Pune City, Mumbai, and Nashik dismantled a drug racket masterminded by Lalit Patil, resulting in the confiscation of over 150 kg of Mephedrone valued at Rs 300 crore.
What is Mephedrone?
Mephedrone, a synthetically produced stimulant falling under the amphetamine and cathinone category, is commonly known by street names such as Meow Meow, White Magic, Bubbles, M-Cat, and Drone. The drug is available in various forms including white powder, crystals, capsules, and pills, and is known to induce effects similar to those of MDMA (ecstasy) and cocaine. It is often consumed orally, nasally, or intravenously, leading to heightened empathy, social connectivity, and euphoria in users.
Evolution of Mephedrone Usage
The first reports of Mephedrone surfaced in 2007 when it began being sold online. Despite being banned in the United Kingdom in 2010, its prevalence continued to rise, particularly in rave culture across Europe. The United States Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) flagged Meow Meow in 2011, two years after its introduction into the country. In India, the drug was eventually included in the list of prohibited substances under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act in 2015, following numerous instances of seizures and misuse.
Pune Police's Operation
The recent crackdown saw law enforcement agencies raid a chemical manufacturing facility in Pune's Daund taluka, along with two warehouses in Vishrantwadi and several establishments in Delhi's South Extension area. The operations led to the recovery of approximately 1,700 kg of Mephedrone, with an estimated value of Rs 3,000 crore.
Nationwide Drug Network Unveiled
Investigations have revealed the existence of a sprawling network involved in the production and trafficking of Mephedrone, with potential international connections. The syndicate appears to have links to major cities across India, including Delhi, and several urban centres in Maharashtra.
Ongoing Investigations
Law enforcement agencies continue to interrogate suspects and delve deeper into the network's operations. Additional arrests have been made, and efforts are underway to uncover the complete extent of the illicit drug trade. The authorities are working in close collaboration with other agencies to ensure a thorough investigation and apprehend all those involved in the nefarious activities.
