Nitish Kumar's Pragati Yatra: Bihar's Aviation Gets Boost, AAI Approves Purniya Airport Terminal Construction

Chief Minister Nitish Kumar's Pragati Yatra is making strides across Bihar, aiming for a developed state. In its third phase, the Chief Minister visited Purnia, announcing schemes worth Rs 581 crore and reviewing Purnia Airport's development. He urged officials to expedite the work, leading to the Airports Authority of India (AAI) approving the terminal building's construction. This means Bihar will soon have another new airport.

The AAI has outlined plans for Purnia Airport, which will feature modern amenities designed for future passenger needs over the next 30-40 years. Five aerobridges are planned to enhance connectivity for travellers. The architects have already completed the design, ensuring that it meets contemporary standards and expectations.

Construction Plans and Cost Efficiency

The terminal building will be constructed at a cost of ₹33.99 crore, which is 23% less than the initial estimate of ₹44.15 crore. The tender process began with bids opened on September 12 and September 27. The final agency selection is nearing completion, after which construction will commence.

An interim terminal will be built using the porta concept before the main terminal's construction begins. This approach allows flight operations to start sooner. AAI has appointed a DGM (Engineering) as project in-charge and instructed contractors to expedite contract completion.

Economic Impact and Regional Benefits

Purnia Airport's development is expected to benefit not just Kosi and Seemanchal regions but also West Bengal, Jharkhand, and Nepal. The interim terminal's completion will accelerate air travel initiation, boosting local convenience and regional economic growth.

During Pragati Yatra, Chief Minister Nitish Kumar reviewed Purnia Airport's demand with officials. He provided guidelines to overcome construction hurdles, ensuring progress aligns with regional aspirations for improved air connectivity.

The construction agency must deposit a performance guarantee of ₹1.69 crore and a security fund of ₹88.30 lakh. Compliance with labour laws at the workplace will be strictly enforced throughout the project duration.
