BSF Rescues Endangered Tokay Gecko in North Bengal, Reaffirming Its Commitment to Wildlife Protection

In a significant operation along the Indo-Bangladesh border, the Border Security Force (BSF) under North Bengal Frontier has rescued a rare and endangered species of lizard-Tokay Gecko-from the border village of North Agra, South Dinajpur district, West Bengal.

Acting on specific intelligence inputs, vigilant troops of the 79 Battalion BSF, Raiganj Sector, launched a swift search operation on 26 June 2025, which led to the discovery of the Tokay Gecko, measuring around 10 inches, hidden inside a box and left unattended near the border fence.

The Tokay Gecko (Gekko gecko) is one of the highest protected species listed under Schedule I of the Wildlife Protection Act, 1972. It is known for its vibrant coloration, nocturnal habits, and high value in the illegal wildlife trade due to superstitious beliefs and unproven medicinal uses in some parts of Asia.

Following the recovery, the rescued reptile was immediately handed over to the Forest Department authorities for further care and legal proceedings.

This is not an isolated incident. According to BSF's compiled data, North Bengal and adjacent frontiers have emerged as sensitive zones for illegal wildlife trafficking. From January 2024 to May 2025, BSF troops have intercepted various attempts involving endangered species across the Indo-Bangladesh border. The seizures include over 400 tortoises, 200 sand boa snakes, 279 pigeons, 186 exotic birds, and even a leopard cub, among others.

The successful interception and rescue of this rare gecko underlines the BSF's dual commitment-not only to securing India's borders from illegal infiltration and smuggling but also to preserving the country's ecological heritage.

The BSF has urged citizens, especially those living in border areas, to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities involving wildlife to the nearest BSF post or forest officials.
