Bihar to Boost Biodiversity Conservation: 1,500 Unique Trees Identified, 32 Declared ‘Heritage Trees’
In a major step towards environmental conservation, the Bihar State Biodiversity Board (BSBB) has identified and initiated the preservation of historically significant and long-living trees across the state. As part of this campaign, 1,500 trees have been selected from a survey of 15,000, with 32 trees officially designated as 'Heritage Trees'.
Identification of Rare Tree Species

BSBB has identified 11 rare tree species across four districts-Munger, Bhagalpur, Jamui, and Buxar. These include Peepal, Pakar, Banyan, Neem, Kanak Champa, Tamarind, Semal, and Mahua. Their unique characteristics and importance have been documented through high-quality images and research reports.
Heritage Trees and Their Significance
The 32 'Heritage Trees' recognized so far are estimated to be up to 150 years old. According to Mihir Jha, Deputy Director of BSBB, detailed studies are being conducted to highlight their historical, geographical, and environmental importance.
To ensure community involvement, the state government has developed a mobile application, allowing the public to contribute to the conservation efforts.
How the Public Can Participate
Citizens and local representatives can use the mobile app to upload pictures and GPS locations of unique trees in their respective areas. The BSBB will verify the details and, if found significant, add them to the official Heritage Tree list.
Official Recognition and Awareness Campaign
As part of the initiative, the state government plans to formally recognize these trees and publish a detailed booklet to raise public awareness about biodiversity conservation.
This initiative is a major step in preserving Bihar's rich ecological heritage, ensuring that these ancient trees continue to thrive while playing a key role in climate resilience and environmental sustainability. With government and community collaboration, this project is set to make a lasting impact on Bihar's biodiversity conservation efforts.
