Bihar’s Jeevika Initiative: Empowering Women With Dignity And Self-Reliance
The Government of Bihar has taken significant strides in empowering women, particularly in rural areas, through its transformative Jeevika initiative. This poverty alleviation program has not only provided employment opportunities but has also instilled a sense of dignity and self-reliance among women.
By focusing on self-help groups (SHGs), the initiative has enabled thousands of women, fondly referred to as Jeevika Didis, to stand on their own feet and contribute meaningfully to their families and communities.

Under the Rural Livelihood Project, women are being provided with self-employment opportunities in various sectors. From managing ponds under the Jal-Jeevan-Hariali Yojana to offering cleaning services in government hospitals and medical colleges, Jeevika Didis are playing a pivotal role in rural development.
Additionally, they are engaged in diverse livelihoods such as crop intensification, poultry farming, goat rearing, fish farming, beekeeping, milk production, and running nurseries. Notably, 5,196 beekeeping groups and 2,740 marketing groups are selling their products both offline and online through platforms like Amazon, Flipkart, and the Gem Portal. The initiative has also entrusted these women with responsibilities like monitoring teacher attendance in government schools and sewing uniforms for students, further expanding their roles in public services.
Beyond economic empowerment, Jeevika Didis are actively combating social evils such as alcoholism, drug addiction, dowry, and child marriage. They are leading awareness campaigns, chanting slogans like "Nashmukt Samaj Ho Hamara" (Let our society be drug-free), and educating villagers about the legal marriage age and the ill effects of dowry. Their efforts have earned praise from Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, who has publicly appreciated their contributions. Initiatives like Didi ki Rasoi, where women run affordable and nutritious canteens in hospitals and government offices, have further strengthened their financial independence and community impact.
Through Jeevika, the Bihar government has not only created a pathway for women's economic empowerment but also fostered a sense of confidence and respect among rural women. By addressing both livelihood and social challenges, the initiative has become a beacon of positive change, transforming the lives of countless women and their families across the state.
