Patna, June 15: Monsoon is likely to reach Bihar in the next 48-72 hours and will hit its northeastern parts first, the Met office said on Wednesday, June 15.

The remaining parts of the state will experience monsoon rainfall by June 20-21, it said. "Monsoon is progressing in its normal course.

It reached north Bengal and Sikkim two days back. It is expected that monsoon will hit north-east part of Bihar first by June 17-18 while the remaining parts of the state will witness monsoon rains in next three days thereafter i.e. by June 20-21," Patna Met director Ashish Sen said.

Since monsoon is at the doorstep, there is a high level of moisture in the air that causes pre-monsoon rains, Sen said, adding that the state will continue to witness pre-monsoon rains till the advent of monsoon.

Met department had earlier said Bihar is likely to witness 8 to 10 per cent less rainfall against its prediction of 106 per cent of rainfall across the country.

During the day, Patna recorded a maximum temperature of 38 degrees Celsius, while Gaya was the hottest place in the state with a maximum temperature of 39.7 degrees.

Bhagalpur registered maximum temperature of 35.4 degrees Celsius and Purnea 33.6 degrees Celsius. Met department has forecast light rainfall in almost all parts of the state.
