1. What inspired you to start Modi Toys, and what is the company's mission?
In January 2017, as I (Viral) prepared to become a father, the question of passing down our culture to my child weighed heavily on my mind. Raised in both Indian and American cultures, I cherished the blend of respect and understanding for both. However, after spending over 30 years in the USA, I noticed myself gradually becoming more American and less Indian. Concerned about my daughter's potential disconnect from her cultural heritage, I embarked on a search for a culturally and religiously relevant toy.
Surprisingly, I couldn't find what I was looking for, despite the vast number of Hindus worldwide. It was then that I had my AHA moment. Thankfully, my sister Avani, who was also expecting, shared my concerns. With her passion for creative writing, she proposed the idea of creating a gift set that included a children's book-a nighttime storybook tailored to toddlers. This addition gave our concept the perfect finishing touch, and we were captivated by the idea. The rest, as they say, is history.
2. How do you come up with new toy designs, and what sets your toys apart from others in the market? / What is the design process that you follow while creating a toy?
Our commitment to excellence drives us to conduct extensive research and development, prioritizing the integrity of our creative process over rushing products to market. With a focus on simplicity, uniqueness, and theological accuracy, our designs are carefully crafted to appeal to both young and mature minds. We go the extra mile by ensuring environmental sustainability and ethical sourcing throughout our production process. Our books, rooted in a solid theological background, provide accurate and engaging content. Proudly made in India, our toys and books reflect our dedication to showcasing the rich cultural heritage of our country. By pushing the boundaries of creativity and avoiding imitation, we deliver unparalleled experiences. Even our music box recordings add a touch of authenticity, featuring different voices for various toy versions. Embrace the joy and depth that our extensive research and development bring to children and adults alike.
3. How do you incorporate feedback from children and parents into your toy designs?
We draw inspiration from our own children's play and interactions, which sparked the idea for Modi Toys. As parents ourselves, we often search for children's products with a cultural twist but struggle to find them. This search for unique offerings in the market led us to create our Shhhanti Musical Crib Mobile, addressing the need for a crib mobile that played Indian or Hindu melodies. We continue to identify white spaces in the market and develop innovative products that resonate with both children and parents, incorporating feedback to ensure our toys meet their expectations and preferences.
At our core, we value feedback from both children and parents, as it plays a crucial role in shaping our toy designs. When we launched our first toy, Baby Ganesh, in 2018, the overwhelming response from customers was incredibly encouraging. The initial batch sold out within two weeks, indicating the enthusiasm and anticipation for our products. We actively engage with parents and children to gather their thoughts and insights through various channels. We conduct surveys, collect reviews and testimonials, and encourage open communication through social media platforms and customer support channels. This direct feedback allows us to understand what aspects of our toys resonate most with children and what improvements or additions they would like to see. We also value the input of parents, as they provide valuable perspectives on the educational, developmental, and entertainment aspects of our toys. Their feedback helps us refine our designs, ensuring that our toys meet the expectations and preferences of both parents and children. By incorporating feedback from children and parents, we continuously iterate and improve our toy designs, creating products that bring joy, education, and cultural appreciation to young minds.
4. Can you share any interesting stories or anecdotes about how children have interacted with your toys?
We have received countless heartwarming stories and anecdotes about the profound impact our toys have on children's lives. Let me share two remarkable stories that showcase the power of our toys to inspire, uplift, and create lasting memories.
One story revolves around a courageous mother who faced years of infertility. Despite her own struggles, she selflessly gifted our Baby Ganeshas to other women going through similar challenges. Miraculously, her perseverance paid off, and she recently welcomed her own precious baby boy through IVF. The Baby Ganeshas became symbols of hope and strength, touching the lives of multiple families and bringing them joy in their journeys to parenthood.
Another deeply moving story involves a mother's intuitive instinct that led her to discover a rare brain tumor in her young son. As they embarked on a challenging journey of treatments and healing, our Baby Ganesh became a source of comfort and solace for both the child and the family. Through the toughest moments, Baby Ganesh provided a constant reminder of resilience and faith, uplifting their spirits and bringing them closer together.
We are humbled and inspired by the incredible experiences people have with our toys.
5. How do you ensure that your manufacturing process complies with the government's "Atmanirbhar" or "Make in India" policies? What are the main materials that you use in your products?
In our plush toy production, we partner with experienced and established manufacturers in India. All manufacturing processes, from design to packaging, are carried out locally. We prioritize sourcing materials from Indian suppliers, promoting the growth of the domestic manufacturing ecosystem. Our plush toys feature stuffing with Global Recycle Standard (GRS) certification, saving up to 6 or 15 bottles depending on the size. Sustainability and quality are at the core of our production approach.
6. What are your thoughts on the current trends in the toy industry? What do you see in its future?
The global plush toy market is currently valued at around $9 billion, with a projected growth rate of 7% over the next decade. In India, the market size is $1.5 billion, and it is expected to experience an impressive growth rate of over 12% during the same period. Considering that Hindu cultural plush toys are still relatively new, we are confident that this emerging trend will not only expand our customer base but also drive profits in the coming decade and beyond. Since conceiving our concept in 2017, we have been pioneers in recognizing the need for cultural toys specifically tailored for Hindus. As we successfully launched and established a market in this previously untapped space, we have observed the emergence of copycat products from competitors. We view this as a sign of the category's growth within the Indian cultural toy market. While we appreciate the recognition, we encourage our competitors to follow in our footsteps by promoting the Make in India effort, using ethically sourced materials, and prioritizing environmental sustainability. By collectively embracing these values, we can collectively make a positive impact, support local industries, and contribute to a sustainable future.
7. What are some of your proudest achievements or moments with the company so far?
One of our proudest achievements is pioneering a new category of toys, books, and baby products that cater specifically to the Indian market. By recognizing the unique needs and cultural significance of Indian customers, we've created products that celebrate and preserve our rich heritage. This commitment has allowed us to provide culturally relevant and engaging experiences for children and families, fostering a sense of pride and connection to their roots.
Expanding our product offering to cater to young adults is a natural progression. We've observed that the desire to stay connected to our roots strengthens as we age. Our goal is to help people embrace their culture in fun, simple, and innovative ways, just like our plush toys do. We want to provide young adults with products that allow them to express and celebrate their cultural identity, enabling them to stay connected to their heritage while enjoying the same joyful experiences they had with our toys as children. This expansion reflects our dedication to supporting individuals in embracing and cherishing their culture throughout their lives.
8. How do you see the future of the toy industry evolving, and what role do you see Modi Toys playing in it?
We anticipate significant growth and customization in the Children's Books, Toys, and Baby Products industries, driven by customers' increasing demand for diversity and representation, including Hindu-inspired offerings. Additionally, there is a parallel trend towards media content, where popular toys often have corresponding animated series. With platforms like YouTube growing, we are excited to create engaging content that complements our products, providing children and families with a comprehensive and immersive experience. We are proud to be at the forefront of this movement, meeting the evolving needs of our customers and enhancing the joy and educational value our products bring.
To ensure that our products reach customers worldwide, we have made a strategic decision to focus on the e-commerce model rather than traditional retail approaches. This allows us to overcome geographical barriers and effectively cater to a broader audience. By embracing innovation and positioning ourselves as market leaders, we aim to provide accessible and inclusive experiences for all our customers, regardless of their location.
Our commitment to being pioneers and staying ahead of market trends drives us to continually develop and offer culturally relevant and diverse products. We are excited about the immense growth and customization opportunities in these industries, and we are dedicated to meeting the evolving demands of our valued customers.
With their unwavering commitment to quality, cultural authenticity, and customer satisfaction, Modi Toys is poised to shape the future of the toy industry. Through their innovative creations and the enduring spirit of the "Make in India" movement, they are not only building a successful brand but also contributing to a brighter and more inclusive world for generations to come.
