India & Israel Strategic Partnership Ensuring Middle East Stability with a Different Quad
India and Israel have had a strategic partnership for the last three decades. Both countries have a shared history. Both were occupied by the British and achieved independence around the same time. Both countries since their birth seven decades ago are bestowed with not so friendly neighbours. Post covid and after the recent Israel Hamas conflict Middle east has changed yet again. Now that the new President has taken over in US, the Middle East is poised to be very aggressively redefined. The Middle East has always been a Melting Pot of civilizations and hence very turbulent ever since recorded history. In this fast changing scenario it becomes very important for India to actively engage with Israel, Middle East, US and all countries that matter.
One country that is re-defining the Middle East & Eastern Europe is Azerbaijan and in the immediate future will be involved in a greater measure in the Middle Eastern landscape. India's geopolitical importance is underscored by its participation in the Quad Security Alliance, which includes the U.S., Japan, and Australia. The Trump Administration views India as an indispensable pillar in this effort, recognizing its growing economic strength and its military capabilities.

The true priorities of the Trump administration in international affairs are evident from Marco Rubio's initial engagements as Secretary of State, both through in-person meetings and phone diplomacy during his first week in office. A key focus has been strengthening ties with Indo-Pacific allies to counterbalance China's growing influence. Among the first countries on Rubio's agenda was India, holding discussions with External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar. This reflects not only the strong personal rapport between Trump and Prime Minister Narendra Modi but also the crucial role India plays in the U.S.'s Indo-Pacific strategy.
Trump Administration Likely to Expand Economic Cooperation with India
Beyond security concerns, the Trump administration is likely to expand economic cooperation with India, particularly in critical technology sectors, supply chain resilience, and infrastructure development. The U.S. is expected to push for greater alignment with India in semiconductor production, rare earth minerals, and AI research-key industries in which reducing dependence on China is a priority.
However, India should also explore broader strategic opportunities beyond the Indo-Pacific region. Another key priority for Trump is ensuring Middle East stability-primarily to safeguard Israel and curb Iran's nuclear ambitions. This geopolitical focus provides India with a pathway to expand its influence in the region, leveraging its historical ties with Gulf nations, its energy interests, and its growing role as a security and economic partner. Strengthening engagement in the Middle East could enable India to solidify its position as a global player while securing additional diplomatic and economic advantages in an increasingly multipolar world.
India and Israel share a strong and multifaceted relationship, built on mutual respect and a shared vision for progress. Since the establishment of full diplomatic ties in 1992, the bond between the two nations has grown significantly.
Defense collaboration forms the cornerstone of the partnership. Israel is one of India's top arms suppliers, providing cutting-edge technologies, including advanced missile systems, drones, and cyber-security tools. Joint ventures, such as the Barak Missile Systems, symbolize the deep strategic alignment.
Today, Trumps policy envisions unprecedented support for Israel, while seeing Iran as a major threat. Israel on its side, sees Azerbaijan - the Caucasian state neighboring Iran and Russia - as its most important strategic ally. Being a secular state with a Muslm population, oil and gas rich situated in the center of the Middle Corridor, offering an alternative for Russian energy resources.
Israel today lobbies full throttle Baku's interests in Washington. Analysts in Israel and in the US see India in a bigger role and as the obvious needed addition to the Middle Eastern future. This means India should change its stance towards Azerbaijan and create more opportunities for both countries.
Last week Israel Aerospace Industries (IAI) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to establish a Center of Excellence aimed at bolstering innovation within East Europe. Israel's largest aerospace and defense company, as well as its top industrial exporter, IAI will assist East Europe to implement programs focused on human capital development, as well as initiatives designed to explore best practices in various technological fields. Four months ago IAI launched its first innovation center in the United States. And this is no coincidence.
The growing importance of East Europe were covered in a recent research paper by Israel's Begin-Sadat Center for Strategic Studies, which is working with NATO. The paper has attracted wide interest in the U.S., as it describes the importance of Middle East for Trump's policy.
As it stands, this is the only Eastern European country world that has maintained a 30-year-long military-strategic partnership with the U.S.'s key ally in the Middle East while bordering two of America's geopolitical rivals-Russia and Iran. Hence this tiny country is a key Israeli partner against Iran, with both viewing the Ayatollah regime as an existentialthreat while cooperating for many years on strategy. "We share a common dangerous enemy-the Iranian tyranny that threatens the destruction of both our peoples", Knesset members stated in 2023 in a collective message to their counterparts.
East European countries are vital for Europe's energy security, supplyingoil and gas to 17 EU countries as a key alternative to Russian supplies besides being an important hub for regional transit trade. In November 2024, the Israeli ambassador to Baku stated: "Israeli companies are now recognizing the strategic importance of Azerbaijan, not only as a partner but also as a crossroads between East and West - the Middle Corridor - serving as a gateway to Central Asia".
There is a good reason for New Delhi to see and capture an opportunity to increase its geopolitical reach up to the Caucasus, while adding new parameters to its alliance with Israel.
Israel India business Summit 2025 is going to take place on 11th of February in New Delhi. Around 60 companies from Israel will be participating & the conference is being addressed buy the Hon'ble minister of Commerce and industry Shri Piyush Goyal. The areas of cooperation between Israel and India are Technology, Artificial Intelligence Defence, agriculture, medicine, Healthcare, Manpower & startups. It is very important that India engages very proactively and consistently with the key players in that region.
