Exxaro Tiles Boosts Competitiveness with Captive 15 MW Solar Power Plant
Exxaro Tiles Ltd., a top manufacturer in India's vitrified tile industry, has announced a major investment in sustainability and operational efficiency with the launch of a 15 MW captive solar power plant.
The plant will generate over 2.25 crore units of renewable energy annually, meeting a significant share of the company's power requirements while reducing reliance on expensive grid electricity. Exxaro estimates the move will save approximately ₹12 crores in power costs each year-directly boosting its operating margins.

Mr. Bharat Aghara, CEO of Exxaro Tiles, described the project as a critical step in securing long-term competitiveness:
"This move marks a significant step in our journey towards sustainable manufacturing. The 15 MW solar plant not only supports our green goals but also creates a long-term cost advantage for our business."
Key operational benefits include:
●Cost Reduction: Lower energy costs directly reduce production expenses.
●Energy Security: Stable, predictable power supply for uninterrupted large-scale manufacturing.
●Efficiency Gains: Integration of advanced solar tracking systems for optimal output.
●Government Incentives: Potential for renewable energy subsidies under central and state schemes.
Construction is slated to begin in Q3 FY2025, with commissioning expected in 12 months. The project will be developed under a capital-expenditure model, underscoring Exxaro's confidence in the return on investment.
Industry experts say the move is well-timed. With power tariffs climbing and ESG expectations rising, Indian manufacturers are under pressure to innovate their energy strategies. For energy-intensive sectors like tiles, captive renewable generation provides both cost predictability and sustainability credentials, essential for maintaining competitiveness in domestic and export markets.
Exxaro's project also addresses growing consumer demand for responsibly produced building materials. By cutting over 18,000 metric tons of CO₂ emissions annually-equal to planting more than 8 lakh trees-the company is reinforcing its reputation as a forward-looking, environmentally conscious manufacturer.
As India pushes for greater adoption of renewable energy and tighter environmental norms, Exxaro's investment in green infrastructure stands out as a model for the ceramics industry and beyond.
