Khaps meet to seek ban on intra-caste marriage

, Nov 23: Khap panchayats of six states will hold a national conference in Delhi next month, to demand ban on same gotra and same village marriages. Sources say they want marriages from same caste to be banned.

Khap Panchayat leaders have been refusing to take the responsibility of honour killings whioch are prevalent in the region. Honour killings are seen as heniuous crimes by rest of the world, but Khaps see it as part of protecting their traditional values.

Leaders of more than 100 khaps will attend the conference and seek amendment of Hindu Marriage Act andela Khap president Tek Ram Kandela, reported Times of India.
"The main reason for honour killings is a section of youths trying to marry within same village. That is why khaps panchayats want a complete ban on such alliances. We support inter-caste marriages but oppose same gotra marriages," he added.

The conference is also likely to constitute a national body for Khap Panchayats.
