Yamuna Row: Haryana CM Meets ECI, Bhupendra Yadav Slams AAP’s 'Fake' Claims Ahead Of Delhi Polls
On January 28, 2025, Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini met with the Election Commission of India (ECI) in response to a complaint filed by an Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) delegation. Led by Delhi CM Atishi, the complaint accused Haryana of causing dangerously high levels of ammonia contamination in the Yamuna River, which supplies water to Delhi. AAP claimed that the ammonia levels have risen to PPM-7, making the water toxic and threatening the functioning of Delhi's water treatment plants, as reported by ABP news.

AAP Demands EC Action to Protect Delhi's Water Supply
Atishi emphasized that Delhi's water treatment plants are designed to handle ammonia up to PPM-2, and the elevated levels are making it increasingly difficult to treat the water. If the ammonia contamination continues, she warned that 30% of Delhi could face a water shortage. AAP urged the Election Commission to take immediate action and also proposed the formation of a joint team from both governments to investigate the issue.
Bhupendra Yadav Slams AAP's 'Fake' Claims
In response to AAP's accusations, Union Minister Bhupendra Yadav condemned the allegations, accusing AAP of creating fear and confusion among the public for political gain. Yadav accused Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal and his party leaders of resorting to "politics of lies" and violating the Model Code of Conduct (MCC). He also highlighted Kejriwal's inflammatory comments about Haryana "poisoning" the water, calling them baseless and harmful to interstate relations.
Haryana CM Denies Allegations, Calls for Apology
Haryana CM Nayab Singh Saini strongly rejected the allegations, calling them "baseless" and an attempt by AAP to shift blame for its own shortcomings. Saini pointed out that the people of Haryana revere the Yamuna River and would never pollute it. He demanded an apology from Kejriwal and warned that legal action for defamation could follow.
Delhi Jal Board Dismisses Kejriwal's Claims as Factually Incorrect
Meanwhile, Delhi Jal Board (DJB) CEO Shilpa Shinde issued a statement dismissing Kejriwal's claims as "factually incorrect and misleading." Shinde urged politicians to refrain from making divisive statements that could damage interstate relations and undermine public confidence in the water supply.
Water Contamination Issue Becomes a Key Election Point
With the Delhi Assembly elections scheduled for February 5, 2025, the political blame game between AAP and BJP continues to escalate. The water contamination dispute has become a critical issue, with both parties seeking to capitalize on it to sway public opinion ahead of the polls. As election day approaches, the water crisis is likely to remain a key point of contention.
