Who is Bansuri Swaraj? Is Delhi Set to Get Its First Woman BJP CM?
Bansuri Swaraj, a Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader, has made her electoral debut as the first-time Member of Parliament (MP) from the prestigious New Delhi constituency. Her candidacy was a significant one, as the constituency has historically been contested by several prominent leaders, including the late former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee and former Deputy Prime Minister Lal Krishna Advani.

Who is Bansuri Swaraj?
Bansuri Swaraj is the daughter of the late Sushma Swaraj, a former Minister of External Affairs known for her influential role in Indian politics. Her father, Swaraj Kaushal, is a senior advocate at the Supreme Court of India and a former Governor of Mizoram. He also served as a Member of Parliament from 1998 to 2004 and was one of the youngest lawyers to be designated as a senior advocate at the age of 34.
Educational Background and Legal Career
Following in her father's footsteps, Bansuri pursued a legal career. She earned a Bachelor of Arts (Hons) in English Literature from the University of Warwick. She then studied law at BPP Law School in London, qualifying as a Barrister at Law and being called to the bar at the Inn of Inner Temple, London. She further honed her academic credentials with a Master of Studies from St. Catherine's College, University of Oxford.
With over 16 years of experience in the legal field, Bansuri Swaraj has handled a wide range of cases, including contracts, real estate, taxation, international commercial arbitration, and various criminal trials. She has also represented the state of Haryana in the Supreme Court.
Entry into Politics and Electoral Success
Bansuri Swaraj formally entered politics in March 2023 when she was appointed co-convener of the BJP's legal cell in Delhi. Her political journey took a significant turn when the BJP nominated her as the party's candidate for the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, replacing incumbent MP and Union Minister Meenakshi Lekhi, who had secured the New Delhi seat twice.
During her election campaign, Swaraj made several key promises, including the allocation of 25 percent of the Member of Parliament Local Area Development Scheme (MPLADS) funds to residents' welfare associations. She also pledged to ensure the effective implementation of central government schemes in her constituency. Her efforts resonated with voters, leading her to a decisive victory with a margin of 78,370 votes.
A Vocal Critic of AAP
Throughout her political career, Bansuri Swaraj has been an outspoken critic of former Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal and his Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government. She has consistently accused the AAP-led Delhi administration of inefficiency, often labeling it as "useless." Her sharp critiques and strong political stance have positioned her as a formidable figure in the BJP's Delhi unit.
