Veteran BJP Leader Vijay Kumar Malhotra Passes Away at 93, PM Modi Condoles

Vijay Kumar Malhotra, a towering figure in Delhi's political landscape and the first president of the Delhi BJP, passed away early Tuesday morning at AIIMS Delhi. He was 93 and had been receiving treatment at the hospital in recent days. His death occurred around 6 am.

AIIMS Delhi confirmed the news in an official statement: "Vijay Kumar Malhotra, a senior BJP leader aged 93 years, was admitted to AIIMS New Delhi, where he passed away in the morning of 30th September 2025."

Prime Minister Narendra Modi mourned the death of BJP's stalwart and remembered his contribution to the BJP party.

In a post on X, PM Modi said, "I am deeply saddened by the passing of BJP's senior leader Shri Vijay Kumar Malhotra Ji, who remained dedicated to public service throughout his life. He was a leader connected to the grassroots, with a deep understanding of the people's issues. He played a crucial role in strengthening the party in Delhi. He will always be remembered for his activism and contributions in Parliament. In this hour of grief, my deepest condolences to his family members and well-wishers. Om Shanti!"

The Delhi BJP expressed deep sorrow over his passing, describing Malhotra's life as a beacon of simplicity and public service. The party credited him with playing a crucial role in expanding the Jan Sangh's presence in the capital.

Delhi BJP President Virendraa Sachdeva paid tribute, saying, "It is with profound sadness that we announce the sudden passing of Professor Vijay Kumar Malhotra, a senior leader of the Bharatiya Janata Party and the first president of the Delhi BJP. He was 94 years old. From the days of the Jana Sangh, he worked tirelessly to propagate the ideology of the RSS in Delhi. His life has always been, and will continue to be, a source of inspiration for all of us in the BJP."

Who Was Vijay Kumar Malhotra?

Born on December 3, 1931, in Lahore, then part of British India, Malhotra dedicated over four decades to public life. Between 1972 to 1975, he led the Delhi Pradesh Jana Sangh and helmed the Delhi BJP twice between 1977 and 1984.

Malhotra helped shape the BJP's enduring presence in Delhi alongside stalwarts like Kedar Nath Sahni and Madan Lal Khurana. He served five terms as a Member of Parliament and was elected twice to the Delhi Legislative Assembly. From 2008 to 2013, he served as Leader of the Opposition in the Assembly and was the BJP's Chief Ministerial candidate in 2008.

He was also often remembered for his victory against former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh in 1999 Lok Sabha elections. In 2004, he was the sole BJP MP elected from Delhi, underscoring his enduring popularity and credibility.

Beyond Politics

Malhotra was also a respected educationist, holding a doctorate in Hindi literature. His contributions extended to sports administration, where he played active roles in promoting chess and archery in Delhi.

His passing marks the end of an era for Delhi politics, leaving behind a legacy of integrity, dedication, and public service.
