The India Meteorological Department issued red and orange alerts for several districts in Delhi on Tuesday due to expected moderate rainfall, thunderstorms, and potential wind speeds of 40-60 kmph, with alerts valid until 1:30 pm, and temperature is expected to be around 19 degrees Celsius.

While some districts have been placed under a red alert, others are on orange alert as unstable weather conditions are expected to persist through the afternoon, potentially affecting daily movement and outdoor activities.

IMD alerts remain in force till early afternoon

The India Meteorological Department stated that the alerts will remain valid until 1:30 pm, advising residents and commuters to stay cautious during this period. According to the latest nowcast warning, South East Delhi, South Delhi, New Delhi, Shahdara and East Delhi have been placed under an orange alert due to the likelihood of moderate rain and thunderstorms.

The IMD has cautioned that weather conditions may change rapidly, leading to brief but intense spells of rain accompanied by thunder activity.

Several districts placed under red alert

A red alert has been issued for North Delhi, North West Delhi, Central Delhi, North East Delhi, West Delhi and South West Delhi. The weather department has warned of moderate rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms, lightning and hail in these areas.

Wind speeds are expected to reach between 40 and 60 kmph over the next hour, increasing the risk of localised disruptions. The IMD has urged people in these districts to remain indoors where possible and avoid unnecessary travel.

According to the IMD, a red alert signifies the need for immediate action by both authorities and residents due to severe weather conditions, while an orange alert calls for heightened preparedness and caution.

Isolated heavy spells reported across outskirts

Providing an update on the evolving situation, the weather office said, "Bad weather over Delhi NCR likely during the next two to three hours."

The IMD further noted that light to moderate rainfall is expected at most locations, with isolated heavy spells accompanied by thunderstorms, lightning, gusty winds of 40 to 50 kmph and hail.

Thunderstorm activity with moderate to heavy rainfall has been reported at isolated locations including Narela, Bawana, Alipur, Kanjhawala, Rohini, Mundaka and Jafarpur. The department has forecast a generally cloudy sky with spells of light rain and gusty winds during the early morning to forenoon hours.

Temperature dips as wet spell continues

The ongoing rainfall is expected to bring down the maximum temperature, which is likely to settle around 19 degrees Celsius. The minimum temperature was recorded at 8 degrees Celsius on Tuesday morning.

Delhi last experienced a similar intense wet spell on January 23, when the city recorded its first and highest January rainfall in two years. That episode had led to a sharp fall in temperatures and offered temporary relief from high pollution levels across the capital.
