New Delhi, Dec 15: Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) member Shazia Ilmi on Sunday lashed out at the government, accusing the latter of not using the Rs 1000-crore fund that was announced in March this year to improve women's safety, in the wake of the gruesome Delhi gangrape case that had shaken millions in India as well as abroad.

Ilmi said in her tweet that it was a shame that the fund remained unutilised even after a year had passed since the horrific incident in a moving bus on the night of December 16 last year. Nirbhaya, the 23-year-old victim who was given the name later because of her courage to face the agony, succumbed to her injuries in a Singapore hospital on December 29.

Chidamabarm announced about the fund during the Budget this year

A massive protest had rocked the national capital after the incident, forcing the government to take measures that resulted in amendment of rape laws.

Union Finance Minister P Chidambaram announced the setting up of the Nirbhaya Fund as a tribute to the braveheart during presenting the Union Budget this year. He said it is a "collective responsibility to ensure the dignity and safety of women".
