New Delhi: Onions sold in mobile vans rotten, unfit for consumption

The Sheila Dikshit government introduced mobile vans selling onions at Rs 50 per kilo as opposed to Rs 75- 90 per kilo in the retail outlets across the city. Since Saturday the number of mobile vans was also increased from 80 to 150.
However the residents claim that the onions sold in these vans are of very poor quality. They said that the onions looked rotten and could not be used for cooking. "What is the point of selling them cheap if they cannot be purchased," one resident lamented.
Residents still forced to buy onions from retail outlets
Since the people find the quality bad, they are again forced to buy onions from retail outlets, thereby defeating the whole purpose of these mobile vans.
On the other hand, officials have a different story to tell. Senior officials claim that the quality of these onions is the same as those sold in retail outlets. "People are actually happy with the quality of the onions especially since they are being sold at Rs 50 per kilo," said Haroon Yusuf, food and supplies minister.
Officials have supported Yusuf and claim that these onions were being purchased from Nasik and Alwar and were able to meet the basic requirements of all residents.
