NCW Calls For Action Against Rahul Gandhi Over Alleged Misconduct With BJP MP In Parliament

The National Commission for Women (NCW) has stepped in, seeking action against Congress leader Rahul Gandhi following allegations of misbehaviour with BJP MP Phangnon Konyak during a heated scuffle inside Parliament.

The NCW, led by chairperson Vijaya Rahatkar, described the incident as a "direct affront" to the dignity and rights of women parliamentarians, calling for immediate measures to uphold respect and equality in the legislative space.

The Incident and Allegations

The controversy arose after BJP MP Phangnon Konyak accused Rahul Gandhi of pushing and threatening her during a protest involving MPs from the NDA and INDIA blocs. The scuffle, which occurred inside the Parliament premises, has sparked widespread political debate, with both parties accusing each other of misconduct. Konyak, in her letter to Rajya Sabha Chairman Jagdeep Dhankar, expressed deep distress over the incident, stating that it had severely hurt her dignity and self-esteem.

NCW's Swift Action and Concerns

In response to the serious nature of the allegations, the NCW took suo-motu cognisance of the incident and urged the Lok Sabha Speaker and Rajya Sabha Chairman to take immediate action. The Commission emphasized that such behaviour should not be allowed to go unchecked, as it undermines the integrity of Parliament and the dignity of female lawmakers. The NCW further stated that Parliament must set a standard for respect and equality, ensuring that women MPs are never subjected to any form of intimidation or misconduct.

BJP MP's Distress and Call for Protection

Phangnon Konyak's distress was evident in her communication to the Rajya Sabha Chairman, where she requested protection in light of the alleged altercation. She emphasized the emotional toll the incident had taken on her, calling it an attack on her dignity. The BJP, in support of Konyak's complaint, condemned Gandhi's actions, further escalating the political conflict.

Congress Responds to the Allegations

The Congress party, however, has rejected the charges, with Rahul Gandhi himself responding to the accusations. Gandhi denied pushing or threatening Konyak and instead accused the BJP MPs of stopping, threatening, and intimidating him during the protest. The Congress maintains that the allegations are part of the BJP's attempt to deflect attention from ongoing political issues.

The Bigger Picture: Political Tensions and Parliamentary Decorum

This incident highlights the ongoing tensions between the BJP and Congress, which have frequently led to disruptions within Parliament. The scuffle and the subsequent allegations raise important questions about the conduct of MPs within the Parliament premises and the broader issue of women's safety and dignity in the political arena.

The NCW's call for action serves as a reminder that Parliament must serve as a platform for constructive debate and legislation, free from violence or intimidation. As the matter progresses, it is expected to continue dominating political discourse and bring attention to the need for better decorum and accountability in Parliament.
