MEA alleges that US was aware of Devyani's diplomatic immunity

New Delhi, Jan 1: The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) on Tuesday said that it believes that United States knew about Indian Diplomat Devyani Khobragade's UN diplomatic immunity. In spite of this she was arrested on Dec 12 and strip-searched on allegations of visa fraud levelled against her.

Devyani was given full diplomatic immunity after she was accredited to the UN as an advisor from Aug to Dec 31.

US on Tuesday said that it was still reviewing the application for Devyani's transfer to UN. "It is under review. We cannot predict when that review will be complete," said a state department spokesperson.

Meanwhile MEA spokesperson Syed Akbaruddin said that it was for the UN to make a formal announcement now. "I myself have been an international civil servant for long. I would find it extremely suprising if an international organisation does not apprise host government about accreditations." Akbaruddin said.

On the other hand, US continues to maintain its stand saying that at the time of her arrest, Devyani did not have full diplomatic immunity.
