Gulberg massacre: SIT wants death sentences for 11 convicts

New Delhi, Aug 20: The Special Investigating Team (SIT) which probed the Gulberg Society massacre has told the Gujarat government that there is a scope to enhance the sentence of 11 convicts who were handed a life term by the trial court.

In its opinion to the state government the SIT has said that it is a fit case to file an appeal and seek death sentence to the 11 persons.

Gulberg massacre: Death sentences sought

On February 28, 2002 following the Godhra train burning, a mob had entered the Gulberg society and killed 69 people including former Congress MP, Ahsan Jafri.

A trial court had awarded 11 convicts life sentences. 12 were awarded a seven year term while one got a 10 year sentence.

In its opinion to the government the SIT has said that this is a fit case to go up in appeal before the High Court. It has sought enhancement of sentences to all the convicts. While seeking a death sentence to 11 persons the SIT has also said that the 13 other convicts should be handed a life term.
