According to a DFS official, the fire was reported at 5:22 pm, prompting the dispatch of two fire tenders to the site. Efforts are being made to douse the fire, and local police have been informed of the situation. Excavators from the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) have also been deployed to assist in controlling the blaze, as reported by Hindustan Times.

The incident has sparked criticism from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), which alleges that despite promises made by the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government to clear the Ghazipur landfill site by December 31 last year, the commitment has not been fulfilled. Praveen Shankar Kapoor, a spokesperson for the Delhi BJP, stated that the landfill fire has resulted in smoke engulfing the entire area, causing inconvenience to residents and businesses.

Rashtriya Lok Dal (RLD) chief Jayant Singh, who witnessed the fire while passing by, took to social media to highlight the failure in waste management. He emphasized the systemic failure of waste management policies and practices due to such fire outbreaks, as reported by Jagran.

Taking to x, formerly known as Twitter, Singh wrote, "Just drove past a terrible fire engulfing the Ghazipur landfill! Such fire outbreaks are hard to contain and bring into focus the systemic failure of our waste management policies and practices."

The Ghazipur landfill has been a persistent environmental concern, with its height reaching 65 meters by 2019, just eight meters shorter than the iconic Qutub Minar. Past incidents, such as a collapse in 2017 that claimed two lives, have highlighted the dangers associated with the landfill, as reported by Hindustan Times.

In 2022 alone, three fire incidents were recorded at the Ghazipur landfill, including one on March 28 that took over 50 hours to extinguish. Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal had previously committed to resolving the landfill issue by December 31 last year, ahead of the 2022 MCD elections. However, instead of reducing waste, additional garbage continues to accumulate at the site.
