Home Ministry Appoints New Police Commissioner For Delhi A Day After Attack On CM Rekha Gupta

The Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) on Thursday announced the appointment of senior IPS officer Satish Golcha as the new Commissioner of Police, Delhi.

Golcha, a 1992-batch IPS officer from the AGMUT cadre, is currently serving as Director General (Prisons), Delhi. According to the MHA order dated August 21, "With the approval of the Competent Authority, Sh. Satish Golcha, IPS (AGMUT:1992), presently posted as Director General (Prisons), Delhi, is hereby appointed to the post of Commissioner of Police, Delhi with effect from the date of assumption of charge and until further orders."

He succeeds SBK Singh, Director General of Home Guards, who was given additional charge as Delhi Police Commissioner by the ministry on August 1.

The decision comes a day after Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta was attacked at her Civil Lines residence during a weekly public hearing. The assailant, identified as Rajeshbhai Khimjibhai Sakriya, a 41-year-old auto driver from Rajkot, Gujarat, entered the premises posing as a complainant before being subdued by the CM's security personnel. An FIR has been registered against him under sections related to attempt to murder.

Who is Satish Golcha?

Satish Golcha has held several key positions in Delhi Police, including deputy commissioner of police (DCP), joint commissioner, and special commissioner. He came into prominence as the special commissioner of police (law and order) during the northeast Delhi riots in 2020.

He also served as the Director General of Police (DGP) of Arunachal Pradesh from February 2022 to June 2023 before being transferred back to Delhi. In May 2024, Golcha was appointed chief of Tihar Jail by Lieutenant Governor VK Saxena on the recommendation of the police establishment board.
