Dry Days In Delhi: No Liquor Sale On These Dates Due To Delhi Assembly Elections
The Delhi government has imposed a ban on liquor sales in the city due to the upcoming assembly elections. The Excise Department has mandated that all liquor shops and establishments serving alcohol remain closed from February 3 to 5, which includes the voting day, and again on February 8 when election results will be declared.
A recent notification from the Delhi excise commissioner announced "dry days" as per Excise Rules-2010. These dry days coincide with the voting for the 70-member Delhi Assembly and the day when votes are counted. The notification specifies that no liquor can be sold or served during these periods.

Dry Days Scheduled for Elections
The order states that dry days will be observed from 6 pm on February 3 until 6 pm on February 5, covering the entire voting period. Additionally, February 8 is designated as a dry day due to vote counting. During these times, no liquor sales or service will be allowed at any establishment.
This restriction applies to all liquor vendors, including hotels, restaurants, clubs, and non-proprietary clubs. Even those with different categories of licenses for possession and supply of alcohol must adhere to this rule and refrain from serving liquor.
Political Campaigns Intensify
Meanwhile, Delhi is witnessing an intense election campaign led by three major political parties: AAP, BJP, and Congress. The BJP is striving to regain power in Delhi after being out of office since 1998. They aim to challenge the ruling AAP, which has dominated recent elections.
The AAP achieved significant victories in the last two assembly elections, securing 67 seats in 2015 and 62 seats in 2020. On the other hand, Congress is attempting to reclaim its political influence in Delhi after failing to win any seats in these past elections.
The decision to enforce dry days aims to ensure a smooth electoral process without disruptions caused by alcohol consumption. This measure is part of broader efforts to maintain order during crucial democratic events like elections.
