Did Delhi's Overnight Rain Come From Artificial Cloud Seeding?
Delhi residents woke up to a pleasant surprise as the city experienced overnight rain, and social media platforms were abuzz with speculations and questions about whether this was the long-awaited "artificial rain" aimed at reducing air pollution and improving air quality.
Delhi witnessed this rainfall precisely as the city administration was gearing up to implement artificial rain, scheduled for November 20-21 via cloud seeding, as a measure to combat the severe air pollution.

According to the Regional Weather Forecasting Centre (RWFC), there were forecasts of light, intermittent rainfall in several areas in and around Delhi and the National Capital Region (NCR). These areas included Sohana, Rewari, Aurangabad, Hodal in Haryana, and Bijnaur, Sakoti Tanda, Hastinapur, Chandpur, Daurala, Meerut, Modinagar, Kithor, and Amroha on the morning of Friday.
Furthermore, predictions indicated that places in Uttar Pradesh, such as Garhmukteshwar, Pilakhua, Hapur, Gulaoti, Siyana, Bulandshahar, Jahangirabad, Anupshahar, Shikarpur, Khurja, Pahasu, Debai, Narora, Gabhana, Jattari, Khair, Nandgaon, and Barsana, would also experience light showers during the same timeframe. Additionally, areas in Rajasthan, including Bhiwari, Khairthal, Alwar, Viratnagar, Nagar, Deeg, Laxmangarh, and Rajgarh, were expected to receive light rainfall during this period.
The national capital has been grappling with severe air pollution for years, particularly during the winter months when a deadly combination of factors converges to create a hazardous smog. The situation has reached alarming levels, prompting authorities to explore innovative solutions to mitigate the problem.
One of the discussed strategies was "artificial rain" or cloud seeding, which involves introducing substances into clouds to encourage rainfall. The aim is to wash away pollutants and particulate matter from the atmosphere, providing temporary relief from the hazardous air quality.
What is cloud seeding?
Cloud seeding is a weather modification technique that has been used in various parts of the world to induce rainfall. In the case of Delhi's air pollution crisis, it was considered a potential tool to disperse pollutants and clear the skies.
The idea behind cloud seeding is to introduce substances such as silver iodide or potassium iodide into clouds, which act as nuclei for water droplets to condense around. This process can increase the chances of rain formation in clouds, offering a respite from pollution. However, it's essential to note that cloud seeding is not a guaranteed method, and its effectiveness depends on various atmospheric conditions.
How could cloud seeding be used to reduce air pollution?
When raindrops fall, they wash pollutants out of the air. This can lead to a significant improvement in air quality, especially in urban areas where pollution levels are high.
Cloud seeding has been used to reduce air pollution in a number of cities around the world, including Beijing, China and Los Angeles, California. In both of these cases, cloud seeding has been shown to be effective in improving air quality, especially during periods of high pollution.
