In the video, the accused identified as Sahil is seen stabbing the girl repeatedly before smashing her head multiple times with a concrete slab after she fell unconscious.

The body of the victim, a resident of JJ Colony in Shahbad Dairy, was found lying on a busy street with onlookers passing by without extending any help.

According to the police, the couple were in a relationship but had a quarrel on Saturday. On Sunday, the victim planned to attend the birthday party of her friend's son but was accosted and stabbed repeatedly. She was also hit with a stone.

The police said the post-mortem would confirm how many times the victim was stabbed.

The Delhi police have filed a case under Section 302 (murder) of the Indian Penal Code at Shahbad Dairy police station on the basis of the complaint lodged by the victim's father.

Sahil has been arrested from Bulandshahr in Uttar Pradesh. He worked as a fridge and AC mechanic.

Delhi chief minister Arvind Kejriwal lashed out at Lieutenant Governor VK Saxena over the horrific murder of a 16-year-old girl in Shahabad area.

"A minor girl is brutally murdered openly in Delhi. This is very sad and unfortunate. The criminals have become fearless, there is no fear of the police," Kejriwal tweeted in Hindi.

"LG sir, law and order is your responsibility, do something. The safety of the people of Delhi is of paramount importance," he added.

Delhi Commission for Women (DCW) chairperson Swati Maliwal reacted to the horrific incident and said Delhi has become extremely unsafe for women and girls.

"A 16-year-old girl was stabbed 40-50 times and then was hit by a stone multiple times after which she died. All this has been captured on CCTV. Several people saw this but did not pay heed. Delhi has become extremely unsafe for women and girls. I appeal to the central government to call a high-level meeting with Union HM, Delhi LG, DCW chief and Delhi CM," said DCW chief Swati Maliwal.
