Delhi Sees Rise In Voter Registration Ahead Of Assembly Elections

According to a recent update from the Election Commission of India, Delhi has registered a total of 1,55,24,858 voters, including 83,49,645 men, 71,73,952 women, and 1,261 individuals from the third gender. This figure represents a 1.09% rise from the previous draft electoral roll published, indicating a growing political engagement among the capital's residents.

Additionally, the gender gap in voter registration has narrowed by four points, while the Elector-Population ratio has seen a two-point increase. Among the new registrations are 52,554 first-time voters aged between 18 and 19, highlighting a significant interest in the democratic process among the youth.

The Special Summary Revision of Electoral Rolls, with a qualifying date of 01.01.2025, kicked off in all 70 Assembly Constituencies of the National Capital Territory (NCT) of Delhi. The process began with pre-revision activities on 20.08.2024 and continued with the publication of the draft electoral roll on 29.10.2024. This period also included the opportunity for the public to file claims and objections until 28.11.2024. In line with the Election Commission of India's guidelines, the draft electoral roll was made accessible at designated locations throughout Delhi and was also available on the CEO, Delhi's website. Furthermore, free copies of the draft electoral roll were distributed to all six recognized political parties, emphasizing the importance of transparency and participation in the electoral process.

As Delhi gears up for the upcoming Assembly elections in February, political dynamics are intensifying. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), which has been out of power in the capital since 1998, is making concerted efforts to dethrone the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), the current ruling party since 2013. The AAP has demonstrated significant electoral strength, defeating the BJP with considerable margins in the 2015 and 2020 Assembly elections, securing majority seats and limiting the BJP to just a handful.

In the lead-up to the elections, the Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) of Delhi has issued a stern warning against the submission of fraudulent documents for voter ID registration. Thus far, eight First Information Reports (FIRs) have been filed against 24 individuals for attempting to use false or tampered documents to obtain voter identification. This crackdown highlights the authorities' vigilance in maintaining the integrity of the electoral roll and ensuring that all participants in the democratic process do so legitimately.

The meticulous preparation for the Special Summary Revision, including the engagement with political parties and the distribution of electoral rolls, underscores the significance of a transparent and inclusive electoral process. The issuance of a public notice in prominent newspapers further aimed to reach a broad audience, informing the residents of Delhi about the revision process and encouraging their active participation.
