Delhi’s Air Quality Gets A Breather, But Mild December Brings Pollution Concerns Ahead

Delhi's air quality showed marginal improvement on Tuesday morning, although it remained in the 'poor' category for the third consecutive day.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has also predicted a mild December with above-normal average temperatures for both maximum and minimum readings across northwest India, as reported by Hindustan Times.

Delhi s Air Quality Gets A Breather But Mild December Brings Pollution Concerns Ahead

Air Quality Index Update

The city recorded an Air Quality Index (AQI) of 274 at 8 a.m., an improvement from Monday's 4 p.m. reading of 280. While smog engulfed parts of the city, including the area near the Old Yamuna Bridge (Loha Pul), blue skies and bright sunshine provided a slight reprieve to citizens.

Out of 37 air quality monitoring stations in Delhi, none reported 'severe' air quality. Six stations recorded 'very poor' AQI levels, while the rest stayed in the 'poor' range.

Weather Conditions and Impact on Air Quality

Delhi's minimum temperature was recorded at 10.5°C on Tuesday, a degree above normal and slightly higher than Monday's 10.4°C. The coldest day this season was November 28, when the minimum temperature dropped to 9.5°C, as reported by Hindustan Times.

The IMD forecasts steady winds at speeds of 10-20 km/hr till Thursday, which will help keep the AQI in check. However, the Centre's Early Warning System (EWS) for Delhi warns that air quality might deteriorate to 'very poor' levels after December 5.
Factors Aiding Air Quality Improvement

Experts attribute the improved air quality to consistent winds and abundant sunshine.

"The prevailing western disturbance has had minimal impact on the plains, resulting in less moisture and no dense fog. This has allowed Delhi-NCR to receive ample sunshine, while strong winds have aided the dispersion of pollutants," explained Mahesh Palawat, vice president of Skymet meteorology.

Historical Context and Future Predictions

Last December, Delhi's air quality was significantly worse, with an average AQI of 348 and three 'severe' air days recorded. The AQI ranged from a low of 286 to a high of 450 on December 23. Pollution levels typically spike in late December as temperatures drop below 5°C, wind speeds decline, and dense fog forms.

While the current conditions suggest a milder start to the winter season, citizens are advised to remain cautious as the second half of December could bring deteriorating air quality, as per media reports.

Notably, Delhi's air quality is expected to remain in the 'poor' range until December 5, with the possibility of it touching 'very poor' in the following days. With mild temperatures and consistent winds offering temporary relief, experts caution against complacency as seasonal changes may trigger a decline in air quality.
