Reduction in Violent Crimes and Thefts

The capital also recorded a slight decrease in murder cases, with 504 incidents in 2024, slightly lower than the 506 reported in 2023. Robberies followed a similar downward trajectory, with the number falling to 1,510 from 1,654, indicating a safer city for its residents. Furthermore, the number of riots saw a decrease, with 33 incidents in 2024, down from 43 in the preceding year, suggesting an improvement in maintaining public order.

Despite the overall decline in crime rates, certain areas raised concerns. Fatal accidents witnessed an increase, with 1,504 cases in 2024 compared to 1,432 in 2023. Similarly, burglaries saw an uptick, surpassing 29,000 incidents, marking a significant rise from the previous year. These areas highlight the need for continuous efforts in road safety and property crime prevention.

On a brighter note, several other crimes saw substantial declines. Snatching incidents decreased notably to 6,493 from 7,886, and instances of hurt dropped to 1,401 from 1,481. Motor vehicle theft also saw a marginal improvement, with fewer cases reported in 2024 compared to the previous year. Theft, one of the most common crimes in the capital, saw a sharp decline, with 117,563 incidents in 2024, down significantly from 158,965 in 2023. Additionally, simple accident cases showed improvement, indicating enhanced road safety measures.

Legislative Enforcement and Crime Trends

In terms of legislative enforcement, cases under the Arms Act saw a slight decrease, while the Excise Act witnessed a sharp rise in violations. Gambling-related incidents experienced a marginal increase, underscoring the need for continuous vigilance in these areas. Notably, there was a significant surge in cases under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act, emphasizing the ongoing battle against drug-related crimes.

A senior Delhi Police officer credited the decline in overall crime rates to improved law enforcement tactics, including enhanced patrolling, community involvement, and the application of technology in policing. "We focused on enhanced patrolling, community engagement, and technology-driven surveillance to prevent offenses. Special operations targeting repeat offenders and organized criminal networks resulted in the arrest of over 100 hardcore criminals this year, significantly disrupting criminal activities across the city," the officer explained. The official also emphasized the importance of citizen cooperation and the use of digital tools in crime prevention efforts. "We leveraged advanced analytics and integrated technology with traditional policing methods, ensuring quicker response times and better resource allocation," the officer added.

New Delhi's decline in crime rates in 2024, particularly in violent offenses and thefts, reflects the effectiveness of the police's strategic initiatives. While challenges remain in areas like road safety and burglary, the overall trend suggests progress in creating a safer environment for the city's inhabitants. The Delhi Police's commitment to integrating technology with traditional methods and fostering community engagement has played a crucial role in these positive outcomes.
