Delhi Govt Takes Strict Action Against Private Schools, Here's Why
The Delhi government has launched a comprehensive crackdown on private schools' commercial practices that have been financially burdening students and their families. In a significant move, education authorities have implemented strict guidelines to prevent schools from forcing students to purchase educational materials exclusively from school-approved vendors at inflated prices.
Delhi Minister Ashish Sood brought the issue to light, highlighting the plight of Economically Weaker Section (EWS) students. "Parents have been complaining about being compelled to buy course books and uniforms directly from schools at prices two to three times higher than market rates," Sood explained. The government's intervention aims to break this cycle of commercial exploitation and ensure fair pricing for educational supplies.

Key measures introduced by the Department of Education include:
1. Mandatory public disclosure of required textbooks and materials
2. Allowing parents to purchase supplies from vendors of their choice
3. Increased transparency in school procurement processes
The official government order explicitly condemned the practice of compelling students to buy educational materials from specific vendors. Schools found violating these directives will face penalties under the Ban on Commercialization of Education (BNS) Act, demonstrating the government's commitment to creating a more equitable educational environment.
To support affected families, the government has established dedicated channels for grievance redressal. Parents can now contact a helpline at 9818154069 or email [email protected] to report any instances of forced purchasing or seek guidance.
Schools must now prominently display lists of required materials on their notice boards and websites, ensuring complete transparency. This approach aims to empower parents with information and prevent hidden financial pressures associated with educational expenses.
The initiative primarily targets protecting students from economic strain, particularly those from vulnerable backgrounds. By challenging these long-standing commercial practices, the Delhi government seeks to ensure that access to education is not hindered by excessive financial burdens.
