Delhi's Rekha Gupta Govt Fulfils BJP Poll Promise, Announces Free Gas Cylinder Benefit for Holi

Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta announced a major welfare measure for city residents, saying the government has fulfilled its election promise of providing free cooking gas to families in the national capital. The announcement marks the implementation of a key assurance made by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) during the Delhi Assembly elections.

Addressing the decision, the Chief Minister said that free gas benefits will be provided during Holi and Diwali, offering direct financial relief to households. The Delhi Cabinet has approved a ₹242 crore fund for the scheme. Under the plan, ration card holders will receive ₹853 directly into their bank accounts through Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) to cover the cost of a cooking gas cylinder.

The benefit will not be limited to LPG users alone. Families using piped natural gas (PNG) will also receive ₹853 via DBT, ensuring equal support across different fuel users. The government confirmed that the first installment will be released this Holi, allowing families to benefit ahead of the festive season.

The rollout is being positioned as the BJP government's first major step in honouring its poll commitments. During the Delhi elections, the party had promised free cooking gas for households, especially to ease the burden of rising fuel prices. The Chief Minister said the scheme reflects the government's focus on delivering welfare promises and providing tangible relief to families.

With the cabinet's approval now in place, officials are preparing for the immediate implementation of the scheme, which is expected to benefit lakhs of families across Delhi and serve as a visible marker of the BJP's governance agenda following the elections.
