The Delhi government's intervention in Sharma Colony, Kirari, Outer Delhi, has brought relief to residents by installing approximately 10 high-capacity pumps to reduce waterlogging; the Delhi Development Authority also stopped waste dumping, and long-term drainage measures will be examined.

The installation of nearly 10 high-capacity pumps across the colony has led to a noticeable reduction in water levels in several lanes, offering temporary but significant relief to affected families.

Pump Installation Reduces Water Levels Across Most Blocks

Following growing complaints from residents, the Delhi Government moved quickly to deploy pumping machinery across all five blocks of Sharma Colony. Around 10 pumps have been installed at key points to drain accumulated rainwater from internal lanes.

As a result, water levels in many streets have fallen by three to six inches. B and C Blocks have witnessed a clear drop in water levels, while most lanes in D and E Blocks have almost dried up completely. Authorities confirmed that pumping operations have been ongoing for the past five days to stabilise the situation.

A Block remains the most affected area, though four pumps are operating there continuously to speed up drainage.

Coordinated Effort With DDA Improves Situation

Alongside pumping operations, residents noted that the Delhi Development Authority has stopped waste dumping at the nearby landfill site, which has further helped reduce water accumulation in the colony. Water from several blocks is being redirected into temporary drains created on vacant DDA land to ensure smoother discharge.

The administration stepped in immediately as the issue escalated, reflecting a coordinated response aimed at preventing further hardship for residents. Officials are continuing to monitor the situation closely, especially with the monsoon season approaching.

Strategic Locations Chosen for Pump Deployment

Pumps have been installed at nearly 10 strategic locations across Sharma Colony. In A Block, pumps are functioning in lanes number 2, 3, 5 and 6. B Block has pumps near lane number 4 and lane number 9. Two pumps in C Block are channeling water into a temporary drainage line created on DDA land.

In D Block, a pump in lane number 6 is draining water from internal streets, while another pump near Baba Balaknath Temple is assisting in pushing water out of the colony. Residents acknowledged that the absence of post-monsoon drain cleaning had earlier worsened the problem, which is now being controlled through mechanical drainage.

"Now, because of the pumps, the water level has reduced by about six inches in the lane. But if water accumulates again, the problems could worsen," said Amit Deshwal, a resident of Sharma Colony.

Residents Acknowledge Relief, Seek Long-Term Planning

Locals admitted that while the government's intervention has eased immediate distress, some waterlogging persists in parts of the colony.

"Due to the pumps, the water level has reduced by around three inches. There is some relief, but water is still present in the lanes. We still have to step out wearing long boots," said Gopal, a resident.

"These pumps stop when diesel runs out and sometimes they are shut at night. If the pumps run continuously, the water will be cleared much faster," said Kusum Mishra.

Calling for sustained government attention, Rajesh Kumar, another resident, said, "Installing pumps has provided relief, but a permanent solution is needed. We hope the government will ensure a lasting fix so this problem does not return every year."

The Delhi Government has indicated that long-term drainage measures will be examined once the immediate situation is fully stabilised, signalling continued engagement with residents of Sharma Colony.
