Delhi Elections 2025: Congress Declares Alka Lamba as Candidate to Contest Against CM Atishi in Kalkaji
The Congress party has made a strategic move by nominating Alka Lamba to contest the Kalkaji seat in the forthcoming Delhi assembly elections, set for February 2025. Lamba, a seasoned politician with a rich history in both the Congress and the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), will go head-to-head with the current Chief Minister, Atishi. This pairing sets the stage for a highly anticipated electoral battle in one of Delhi's key constituencies.
Having previously held the legislative seat for Chandni Chowk, Lamba's return to the Congress in 2019 marked a significant turn in her political journey, following her departure from AAP due to internal discontent. Her extensive political background is complemented by her leadership role as the president of the All India Mahila Congress, showcasing her prominence within the party ranks.

The electoral contest in Kalkaji is further intensified by the involvement of another political heavyweight, Sandeep Dikshit, who has been fielded against AAP's Arvind Kejriwal for the New Delhi seat. Dikshit, with his deep political lineage as the son of three-time Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit, and Kejriwal, seeking his fourth term, highlight the high stakes and intense competition expected in the upcoming elections.
Kalkaji, currently represented by Atishi, is a stronghold for AAP, having secured wins in both the 2015 and 2020 elections. The constituency's demographic diversity, including communities from Other Backward Classes (OBC), Dalit, Muslim, Brahmin, Punjabi, and Baniya backgrounds, makes it a critical battleground for the parties involved. Atishi's rise to the Chief Minister position in September, following Kejriwal's resignation, underscores her significance within AAP and sets up a formidable challenge for Lamba.
Alka Lamba's political journey spans several decades, beginning with her days as a student leader. Her roles have ranged from President of the Delhi University Students' Union (DUSU) to national President of the National Students' Union of India (NSUI). Additionally, her experience includes serving as General Secretary of the Delhi Pradesh Congress Committee (DPCC) and Secretary of the All India Congress Committee (AICC). Her appointment as All India Mahila Congress President on 5 January 2024 further solidifies her standing within the Congress party.
As the current Delhi assembly's term approaches its end on 23 February 2025, the anticipation for the official polling dates from the Election Commission of India (ECI) grows. The election not only represents a pivotal moment for the competing candidates but also offers a glimpse into the evolving political landscape of Delhi, showcasing the intricate dynamics and strategic plays by the major political parties.
