In a tragic event in Delhi, three UPSC aspirants lost their lives after being trapped in a flooded basement at Rau's IAS coaching centre. The incident has prompted a thorough investigation and a call for stricter safety regulations in educational settings.

Three students tragically lost their lives on Saturday after being trapped in a flooded basement of a coaching centre in Delhi's Old Rajendra Nagar.

The victims were Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) aspirants studying at Rau's IAS coaching institute.

Rescue teams from the National Disaster Response Force (NDR) and local police their bodies several hours after the flooding. The three deceased students have been identified as Shreya Yadav from Ambedkar Nagar, Uttar Pradesh, Tanya Soni from Telangana, and Nivin Dalwin from Ernakulam, Kerala, as reported by Hindustan Times.

Their bodies have been sent to the RML mortuary, according to the Delhi police.

Details about the Incident

The Delhi Fire Department received a distress call around 7 pm on Saturday regarding waterlogging at Rao IAS Study Centre and Karol Bagh area. Reports indicated that two or three students were trapped in a flooded basement. Upon arrival, firefighters found the basement filled with water. Efforts to pump out the water were initially hindered by continuous rainwater inflow.

Once the road water receded, they managed to reduce the water level from 12 feet to eight feet and retrieved the bodies of the students. Approximately 30 students were present at the coaching centre during the incident, as reported by Hindustan Times. Out of these, 12 to 14 were rescued and taken to a hospital, while others managed to escape on their own.

Rescue Operation and Investigation

The rescue operation has concluded, and an inquiry will be conducted to determine how water entered the basement and why a class was being held there. The police have detained the owner and coordinator of the coaching centre and registered a criminal case over the deaths of the students, as per media reports.

Delhi Mayor Shelly Oberoi has directed strict action against such coaching centres operating in basements in violation of building bye-laws. She instructed an immediate enquiry to identify if any Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) officers are responsible for this tragedy. "If any official is found guilty, the strongest possible action must be taken against them," she said, as reported.

This tragic incident has raised serious concerns about safety regulations in educational institutions across Delhi. The authorities are now under pressure to ensure such incidents do not recur by enforcing stricter compliance with safety norms.
