Delhi Assembly Polls: Police Cracks Down On Violations As Polling Date Nears

As Delhi prepares for its 70-seat assembly elections scheduled for February 5, the Delhi Police have intensified efforts to ensure law and order. Between January 7 and January 19, a total of 397 cases were registered for violations of the Model Code of Conduct (MCC).

During this period, the police made significant seizures:

  • 36,223 litres of illicit liquor, valued at over ₹1 crore
  • 74.85 kilograms of drugs and 1,200 injections, worth over ₹15 crore
  • ₹3 crore in cash and 37.39 kilograms of silver metal

The police arrested 14,183 individuals under preventive measures and related acts.
Crackdown on Criminal Networks

In a major operation, the North district's Special Staff of Delhi Police dismantled an interstate gang of illegal firearm suppliers, arresting three individuals. The raid led to the recovery of:

  • 5 semi-automatic pistols
  • 6 country-made pistols (desi katta)
  • 28 live cartridges

Two of the accused have reportedly been in the illegal arms trade for over two decades and were linked to the 2023 Pragati Maidan Tunnel Robbery case.
Pre-Election Liquor Bust

On Sunday, police intercepted a liquor smuggler transporting illicit alcohol across the Haryana-Delhi border, a move seen as part of pre-Republic Day and pre-election vigilance.

Political Alliances Shape Up

Shiv Sena chief and Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde declared his party's support for the BJP in the Delhi Assembly elections, aiming to consolidate Hindutva votes. However, he hinted at contesting local body elections independently after consultations with alliance partners.

With the elections approaching, Delhi Police remain vigilant, cracking down on criminal activities and ensuring a smooth electoral process.
