Delhi Assembly Polls: Election Commission Calls For Responsible AI Use In Poll Campaigns
The Election Commission of India (ECI) has taken significant strides towards ensuring a fair and transparent election process, especially with the advent of new technologies such as Artificial Intelligence (AI). Recognizing the potential for AI to influence voter opinions, the ECI has emphasized the need for political parties to be forthcoming about the use of AI-generated content in their campaigns.
This includes a directive to disclose when images, videos, or other materials have been created or significantly altered through AI, with labels like "AI-Generated," "Digitally Enhanced," or "Synthetic Content."

Chief Election Commissioner Rajiv Kumar has been vocal about the risks associated with AI and deep fakes, particularly their ability to spread misinformation. During the announcement of the Delhi Legislative Assembly elections, Kumar highlighted the importance of vigilance against misinformation that could undermine trust in the electoral system.
He called on political entities to uphold dignity and respect in their campaigning efforts. The ECI's push for transparency is not just limited to AI but extends to all digital content used in political campaigns, urging the inclusion of disclaimers wherever synthetic content is utilized.
In a move to promote voter engagement and awareness, the Chief Electoral Officer of Delhi, R. Alice Vaz, launched an innovative campaign involving over 3,000 auto-rickshaws. These vehicles, adorned with messages to encourage voting, will traverse the city's 70 constituencies. This initiative aims to remind citizens of their voting rights and inspire them to participate actively in the democratic process. The deployment of these specially designed autos is a testament to the ECI's commitment to enhancing voter awareness in the run-up to the Delhi Legislative Assembly Election 2025.
The recent advisory from the ECI sets a precedent for responsible campaigning by mandating the labeling and disclosure of AI-generated content. This move is part of a broader effort to ensure ethical use of social media and AI in political campaigns, striving for a level playing field among all parties. It aligns with guidelines issued during the Global Elections and Leadership Summit 2024, where the focus was on ethical social media engagement.
This initiative aligns with the Election Commission's broader goals of promoting transparency, accountability, and responsible campaigning practices. By requiring political parties to clearly identify AI-generated content, the ECI aims to maintain the integrity of electoral processes and prevent the spread of misinformation. This measure, along with efforts to boost voter awareness and participation, underscores the Commission's commitment to upholding democracy and ensuring that every voice is heard in the democratic process.
