Despite AAP's sweeping victories in the Delhi Assembly elections, it has failed to make a mark in Lok Sabha elections. Since 2014, the BJP has consistently won all seven parliamentary seats from Delhi, both in the 2014 and 2019 general elections. This suggests a stark contrast in voting behaviour, where the electorate prefers AAP for local governance but trusts BJP for national leadership.

The BJP's appeal in parliamentary elections can be attributed to its strong nationalistic narrative, focus on security, and economic development policies. Additionally, Prime Minister Narendra Modi's popularity and the party's organizational strength have helped it maintain dominance at the national level. BJP's core voter base in Delhi's middle-class and business communities has remained steadfast, ensuring its continued success in Lok Sabha polls.

Why AAP Struggles in Lok Sabha Elections

One of the primary reasons AAP has failed to secure a single Lok Sabha seat in Delhi is its limited national appeal. While AAP's governance model has found strong support locally, its inability to position itself as a credible national alternative to BJP has hindered its success in general elections. Unlike state elections, where local issues take precedence, Lok Sabha elections are often fought on broader national concerns such as defence, foreign policy, and economic growth-areas where BJP has a stronger hold.

Moreover, BJP's well-oiled election machinery and strategic alliances have further diminished AAP's chances in parliamentary elections. While AAP's welfare policies have benefited the poor, BJP's outreach to the urban middle class and its emphasis on infrastructural development has secured its victory in Lok Sabha elections.

The Road Ahead: BJP vs AAP in 2025 Assembly Elections

With the 2025 Delhi Assembly elections approaching, the battle for supremacy is heating up. The BJP, which has been out of power in Delhi since 1998, is making significant efforts to challenge AAP's dominance. By focusing on issues such as corruption allegations against AAP, infrastructure development, and the distribution of free housing for slum dwellers, BJP aims to weaken AAP's stronghold.
