BJP’s Resounding Victory In Delhi Signals Broad Acceptance Across Communities

The BJP's victory in the 2025 Delhi Assembly Election may have taken nearly three decades, but its scale and reach have upended perceptions of the party's acceptability among various caste and religious groups.

Given that Delhi is a microcosm of India, the results have also raised hopes for the party's prospects among these groups in their respective home states, reported NDTV.

The BJP's appeal among Scheduled Castes and Other Backward Castes has been consistently questioned by the Congress, which has reinforced its argument by advocating for a caste census. In the past, the BJP has made significant efforts to win back OBC support, particularly in Maharashtra and other states.

The Delhi results indicate that of the BJP's 22 OBC candidates, 16 emerged victorious. The party also secured all seven seats where the OBC population exceeds 10%.

Candidates from Haryana and Purvanchal also appeared to have gained widespread acceptance. Of the 14 candidates of Haryanvi origin, 12 won, while four of the six Purvanchali candidates were successful.

The BJP won 12 out of 13 seats where Haryanvi voters constitute more than 5% of the electorate. Additionally, in the 35 seats where Purvanchali voters account for over 15%, the BJP secured 25 victories. This prompted Prime Minister Narendra Modi to extend his gratitude to Purvanchali voters, acknowledging them as "an MP from Purvanchal."

The party, which was defeated in the last Punjab Assembly elections, also won three of the four seats where Sikh voters comprise more than 10% of the electorate. Furthermore, out of 28 seats with more than 10% Punjabi voters, the BJP claimed victory in 23.

However, its performance in constituencies with significant Valmiki and Jatav populations left room for improvement. The BJP won four of the nine seats where Valmiki voters exceed 10% and six of the 12 seats where Jatav voters surpass the same threshold.

Of the 12 Scheduled Caste candidates fielded by the BJP, four were successful.

The party also made significant gains in constituencies bordering Haryana and Uttar Pradesh, both BJP-ruled states. Out of the 22 border constituencies, the party won 15-seven of the 13 seats adjacent to Uttar Pradesh and nine of the 11 bordering Haryana.

Despite these caste-based dynamics, the election campaign in Delhi was largely devoid of rhetoric on caste politics. The capital attracts people from diverse states, castes, and economic backgrounds in search of better opportunities, a factor that often transcends other identities.

The BJP's resounding victory is therefore seen as an indication of broad acceptance, reflecting both Delhi's demand for improved governance and its disenchantment with AAP.

In his victory speech to party workers, Prime Minister Narendra Modi described the outcome as a triumph of "development, vision, and trust (Vikas, Vision, Vishwas)."

"Delhi has given us its love, and I want to assure them that this love will be reciprocated through development. Their trust in us is a responsibility, which Delhi's double-engine government will fulfil," he added.
