Delhi Police constable Kajal died on Tuesday at a Ghaziabad hospital, five days after her husband, Ankur Chaudhary, allegedly assaulted her at their home near Dwarka Mor, resulting in critical head injuries; the case has been upgraded from attempted murder to murder. Kajal, who joined the Delhi Police in 2022, was a commando in the Special Cell's SWAT unit; her husband, now in judicial custody, works as a clerk in the Ministry of Defence.

The constable, Kajal, had sustained critical head injuries after being attacked with a metal dumbbell and having her head smashed against a door frame. She was declared brain dead by doctors before being shifted to another hospital, where she succumbed to her injuries early Tuesday morning.

Assault at Dwarka Mor and medical treatment

The incident took place at the couple's residence in the Vinod Nagar area near Dwarka Mor. After the assault, Kajal was rushed to a private hospital near Dwarka, where doctors declared her brain dead. On January 25, she was shifted to another private hospital in Nehru Nagar, Ghaziabad. She died at around 6 am on Tuesday, according to officials.

Police said the victim's family has alleged that her husband, Ankur Chaudhary, had been harassing her for dowry, including demands for money and a car.

Case upgraded after constable's death

Police confirmed that a case was initially registered as attempt to murder and the accused was arrested on the night of the incident. Following Kajal's death, the charges have now been made more severe.

"We registered a case of attempt to murder and arrested the commando's husband, Ankur Chaudhary, the same night the crime was committed. He was produced before a Delhi court and sent to judicial custody. Now that the commando has died, the case has been converted from attempt to murder," said Madhup Tiwari, Special Commissioner of Police (Law and Order, Zone-2).

Personal background and police career

Originally from Ganaur in Haryana, Kajal joined the Delhi Police as a constable in 2022. She later completed commando training and was posted to the SWAT unit of the Special Cell. Her brother, Nikhil, is also a police constable, posted in the office of the Assistant Commissioner of Police at Parliament Street.

Kajal married Ankur Chaudhary in November 2023 after a four-year relationship. Chaudhary works as a clerk in the Ministry of Defence. The couple has a one-and-a-half-year-old son, who was staying with his maternal grandparents at the time of the incident.

Brother recalls chilling phone calls

Nikhil said Kajal met Chaudhary while pursuing her graduation at a college in Panipat. After both secured government jobs, they got married and later bought a flat near Dwarka Mor.

Recalling the night of the assault, Nikhil said Chaudhary had called him on January 10, claiming that Kajal was arguing with him.

"My sister took the phone and tried to explain what had happened. Chaudhary got offended by some remarks she made. He snatched the phone and asked me to record the conversation as evidence, saying he was going to kill my sister. I then heard her screaming before the call got disconnected," Nikhil said.

He further added, "About five minutes later, Chaudhary called again and told me that he had killed my sister and that I should come to Delhi to claim her body. When I reached Delhi around midnight, his family had already arrived and he had admitted my sister to a nearby private hospital, where doctors declared her brain dead."
