After PM Modi’s Fuel-Saving Appeal, Delhi CM Rekha Gupta Cuts Official Vehicle Use, Pushes Metro & Carpooling

Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta has ordered strict limits on official vehicle use across the administration, responding to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s call for austerity after sharp global fuel price rises linked to the America-Israel-Iran conflict. The move covers ministers, legislators and officers, and aims to cut fuel consumption while pushing carpooling and public transport among both officials and residents.

Gupta’s announcement follows Narendra Modi’s wider appeal for restraint in daily spending as energy markets stay volatile. Modi has urged people and institutions to reduce dependence on petrol and other petroleum products, and to control use of essential cooking supplies. The Prime Minister has also asked citizens to avoid non-essential foreign travel, limit gold purchases and promote work-from-home models wherever feasible.

Explaining the decision on social media platform X, Rekha Gupta said that the Delhi government is acting with a sense of responsibility during the current global energy crisis. Gupta stated that the number of vehicles used for official work will now be capped. Departments have been told to treat government cars as a last resort, not a default facility for everyday movement within the city.

The Chief Minister brought the entire political and administrative leadership within the scope of the Delhi vehicle restriction. Gupta said that personal travel by the Chief Minister, cabinet colleagues, all BJP MLAs, other public representatives and senior officials should rely on government vehicles only when clearly required. The administration will give priority to shared travel, encourage staff to pool rides, and rely more on buses and the Delhi Metro.

In the same X post, Gupta directly appealed to residents to mirror these steps. Gupta wrote, "हम दिल्ली के लोगों से अपील करते हैं कि वे जहां भी संभव हो, मेट्रो, बसों और सार्वजनिक परिवहन का अधिक से अधिक उपयोग करें। वे कारपूलिंग को अपनाएं और निजी वाहनों पर अपनी अनावश्यक निर्भरता को कम करें।" Gupta linked this appeal to the need for collective support during uncertain global fuel supply conditions.

To underline the national context, Gupta stressed that the decision is tied to the broader energy and geopolitical situation. Gupta said that people should act with awareness during this period of conflict and instability in fuel markets. Emphasising civic duty, Gupta added that citizens must remain mindful of the country’s needs and perform their responsibilities with honesty, especially when it comes to everyday consumption choices.

The central and Delhi governments are therefore presenting a united front on restraint in fuel use and public spending as energy costs climb. With official vehicle trips being reduced, carpooling encouraged and work-from-home promoted, authorities hope to ease pressure on fuel demand while keeping essential services running.
