SC rebukes former Left govt on Singur land acquisition
New Delhi, May 5: The Supreme Court on Wednesday rebuked the previous Left Front government on the Singur land acquisition issue saying it 'rushed' through the exercise and violated the procedure. It also called the land acquisition for Tatas' Nano car project a "farce".
The bench of Justices Gopal Gowda and Arun Mishra was surprisd when they learned that the then Left government had not carried any survey before acquring and allotting the land to the Tatas. The government of Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee had also failed to forward any proposal to the West Bengal Development Corporation. While hearing the petitions challenging the acquisition by the erstwhile Left government, Justice Gowda said the survey should be conducted by the district collector who "must exercise his power independently".
The Tatas had also filed an appeal against the current Trinamool Congress government's 2011 legislation for reclaiming the land.
