Will Have To Stop Somewhere: Sharad Pawar Hints At Retirement As Maharashtra Prepares For Polls

In a significant announcement that may signal the end of a remarkable political journey, Sharad Pawar, the seasoned leader of the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP), revealed he might step away from electoral contests after his current term in the Rajya Sabha concludes in 1.5 years. Having established the NCP in 1999, Pawar, at 83, has been a pivotal figure in Maharashtra's political landscape, earning the moniker 'grand old man.' This revelation came as he addressed his supporters in Baramati, a key constituency that has witnessed the Pawar family's political dominance, indicating a potential pause in his nearly six-decade-long career.

The political battleground of Baramati is heating up, showcasing a unique face-off within the Pawar family, as Sharad Pawar's grandnephew, Yugendra Pawar, competes against his nephew, Ajit Pawar. Notably, Ajit Pawar, a stalwart in his right with five previous electoral victories in Baramati, is contesting this time under a different banner, marking a significant shift from past elections where he enjoyed support from the NCP. This internal family contest is seen by many as a litmus test for Sharad Pawar's enduring influence in the region.

Will Have To Stop Somewhere Sharad Pawar Hints At Retirement As Maharashtra Prepares For Polls

"I am not in power... and my tenure in the Rajya Sabha has one-and-a-half years left. (After that) I will not contest any election in the future. (I) will have to stop somewhere..." Pawar expressed, acknowledging the need to eventually step back from his active political role. His decision comes amidst the backdrop of the November 20 Assembly election in Baramati, stirring discussions about leadership succession and the future direction of his party.

The NCP, along with its coalition partners, is grappling with significant political challenges, making the upcoming election a critical moment. Sharad Pawar's stance on the internal contest within his family has been remarkably dignified, emphasizing no ill will towards his nephew Ajit Pawar, who previously led a factional split within the NCP. "I have no grudge against him (Ajit Pawar) ... he led you for nearly 30 years... " Pawar stated, highlighting his focus on nurturing a new, dynamic leadership to guide the party forward.

Amidst these developments, speculation about Sharad Pawar's political future has been rife, with discussions about his retirement surfacing intermittently. Ajit Pawar, in January, reignited these speculations by critiquing his uncle's decision not to retire from the party's leadership, despite previous commitments. Sharad Pawar's response to such provocations has been stoic and reflective of his unwavering commitment to his political work. "Na tired hu, na retired hu," he declared, echoing the famous words of the late Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee, asserting his capability and unwillingness to retire just yet.

However, Sharad Pawar's brief consideration of resigning as the NCP's head last year, amidst an internal party crisis, indicates the complexity of his position. Despite his resignation offer being rejected by party leaders, it underscores the deep respect and admiration he commands within his political circle. "All of us want Sharad Pawar to continue... he should respect the feelings of lakhs of us, and he should continue," said Praful Patel, highlighting the party's reliance on Pawar's leadership.

As Sharad Pawar contemplates his future beyond electoral politics, his legacy within the NCP and Maharashtra's political scene remains undisputed. His recent comments in Baramati reflect a gracious acknowledgment of the support he has received over the years and a clear vision for the party's future, emphasizing the importance of generational transition in leadership. This strategy aims to ensure that the NCP remains vibrant and relevant in the ever-evolving political landscape of Maharashtra and beyond.
