Why Navi Mumbai’s Palm Beach Road Will Be Traffic-Free Every Sunday Morning?—Find Out Here

Sports and fitness enthusiasts in Navi Mumbai can look forward to a new initiative transforming Palm Beach Road into a hub for outdoor exercise every Sunday. A joint proposal by the Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) and the city police aims to promote a culture of fitness by dedicating three lanes of the scenic six-lane road for recreational activities. The initiative is expected to commence in January, as per a Hindustan Times (HT) report.

The plan will cover an eight-kilometre stretch along the coastline, extending from Moraj Circle to the NMMC headquarters. This area, already popular among walkers, runners, and cyclists, features dedicated walking and cycling tracks. Under the proposal, one side of the six-lane road will be closed to traffic from 5:00 AM to 10:00 AM every Sunday. Temporary dividers will be installed to ensure smooth two-way traffic flow on the remaining three lanes during these hours.

NMMC Commissioner Kalidas Shinde, who is also an international marathon runner, expressed enthusiasm about the initiative. "We want to promote health and fitness in the city, and Palm Beach Road is one of the most attractive locations for such activities. It is already a preferred venue for marathons," he said in the HT report. Shinde added that safety measures for participants will be implemented soon.

Navi Mumbai Police Commissioner Milind Bharambe, a fitness enthusiast himself, is overseeing the logistical arrangements. These include planning the placement of barricades and dividers, identifying stop points, and estimating the number of volunteers needed to assist participants. Bharambe noted that he would review the proposal for compliance and ensure the associated costs remain minimal.

"The road will only be closed temporarily for 5-6 hours on Sundays, during off-peak traffic times. We will make sure this does not inconvenience residents or motorists while encouraging more people to participate," Bharambe said in the same report.

According to the HT, Commissioner Shinde anticipates that the initiative will attract fitness enthusiasts from neighbouring cities, making Palm Beach Road a weekend hotspot for exercise and recreation.
