Who Is Jabar Zubair Ansari, US Returned Man Accused of Attacking Security Guards After Asking About Religion?

In a shocking incident that reminds of Pahalgam terrorist attack, a man Jabar Zubair Ansari killed two people after enquiring their religion.

The incident occurred near Asmita Enclave, behind Wockhardt Hospital, at a building under construction in Nayanagar (Mira Road East) in Mumbai.

Who Is Jabar Zubair Ansari?

According to a report in The Times of India, the individual at the centre of the case is named Jabar Zubair Ansari. He is a 31-year-old science graduate who lived in the United States for several years before returning to India in 2019. Since his return, he resided alone in Mira Road, a suburb within Maharashtra's Thane district, where he earned a living by offering online tutoring in chemistry.

The two victims were security guards: Rajkumar Mishra, whose condition is critical and Subroto Ramesh Sen, receiving medical care for serious injuries.

Ansari first approached the guards pretending to seek directions. He then returned, inquired about their names and religious identities, and proceeded to ask whether they could recite the Kalma, the Islamic declaration of faith. When the guards admitted they could not, he allegedly drew a knife and launched his assault. The Times of India reports adds that he specifically pressured one guard to recite the Kalma, and upon failure, attacked both men-first Mishra, then Sen, who was nearby.

Authorities apprehended Ansari within 90 minutes, thanks to CCTV footage that helped identify him. It is reported that his extended isolation might have made him susceptible to online radical influences.

Evidence Recovered: The Times of India states that handwritten notes discovered at Ansari's residence reveal his wish to join ISIS and his description of the stabbings as a "first step" toward that ambition. News18 report adds that his online activity includes access to several Telegram channels that promote militant interpretations of jihad, referencing conflicts such as Gaza and containing writings that invoke "true jihad."

Radicalisation Pathway: Although no direct communication with any terrorist organisation has been confirmed, News18 report indicates that officials believe Ansari was driven by propaganda from groups like ISIS. This mirrors a growing worldwide trend of individuals radicalising through internet ecosystems rather than formal recruitment mechanisms.
