Which Party Is Likely To Benefit As Maratha Activist Jarange Patil Exits Poll Race In Maharashtra?

Maratha reservation activist Manoj Jarange Patil will be not taking part in the upcoming Maharashtra Assembly elections. He has also instructed candidates backed by his movement to withdraw their nominations, sending ripples through the Mahayuti coalition, the alliance led by the BJP and its partners.

Addressing the media on Monday, Patil emphasized his commitment to broader inclusivity. "We cannot contest elections relying solely on one community," he said. "We reached out for support from leaders of the Muslim and Dalit communities but received no response. Therefore, we have chosen not to field candidates this election."

Patil's remarks included a subtle rebuke aimed at political figures who prioritize familial dynasties over public service. "Politics isn't our family business. We support no party or leader. Those who promised '400 seats'-you've seen how that turned out. The Maratha community's influence will remain unchallenged," he remarked, hinting at unfulfilled promises made by some leaders.

Who Benefits From Patil's Decision?

Manoj Jarange Patil's sway is particularly strong in Marathwada, a region with eight Lok Sabha seats, where his past opposition to BJP and former Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis had a measurable impact. His stance during the last Lok Sabha elections influenced the Mahayuti alliance's losses in Marathwada, as well as in parts of Vidarbha and Western Maharashtra.

Political analysts believe that Patil's decision to back out from the election may alter the vote dynamics, especially for the Mahayuti coalition. Some leaders had anticipated that Patil's candidates could draw votes away from the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) coalition's traditional Maratha, Dalit, and Muslim voter base.

Veteran MVA leader Sharad Pawar responded with satisfaction to Patil's decision, stating, "There is no link between the MVA and Patil's withdrawal. I am glad he made this decision, as fielding candidates would have clearly benefited the BJP."

A Changing Election Landscape

Marathwada and Western Maharashtra together have 116 Assembly seats, areas where Patil's influence is prominent. Candidates from all parties have sought his endorsement in these regions. In the last election, anti-BJP sentiment unified Maratha, Dalit, and Muslim communities under the MVA banner. This sentiment appears likely to continue, with divisive rhetoric from certain BJP leaders further fueling voter discontent.

However, the BJP can only change the results if it manages to consolidate Hindu votes.
