Western Railway Improves Stations With Women-Focused Amenities; Check Them Inside

On the eve of International Women's Day, celebrated globally on March 8, Western Railway (WR) announced new protocols aimed at making railway stations more gender-inclusive, according to a Hindustan Times (HT) report.. These measures will be integrated into the ongoing Amrit Bharat station scheme, which is focused on enhancing both the aesthetics and passenger amenities of stations across the network.

The new Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) will initially be implemented on stations along the Churchgate-Dahanu corridor that meet specific criteria. Key improvements include well-equipped women's toilets, separate ticketing counters, baby feeding rooms, and improved lighting. Additionally, areas where ladies' coaches halt will be monitored with CCTV cameras to ensure safety.

Feeding rooms will be equipped with comfortable seating, a nappy-changing table, and space to store baby bags. All ladies' toilets will feature hangers, sanitary pad vending machines, and dedicated lady attendants for added convenience.

As per the HT report, a senior WR official explained that "blind spots" at stations will be identified and well-lit to ensure safety, particularly in entry and exit points and toilet blocks. Furthermore, staff across various departments will undergo training to handle harassment cases effectively. Clear instructions on how to report crimes will be displayed at stations, along with helpline numbers.

The official added, "We are also planning to install panic buttons inside ladies' waiting rooms, with buzzers linked to the railway police and station master's offices. Additionally, dedicated retiring rooms with lady attendants will be set up."

In terms of improving the working conditions for women railway staff, the new guidelines include experience-sharing sessions and monthly feedback to enhance facilities. The protocol also calls for regular gender sensitivity training for male staff to foster a respectful and harmonious work environment.

These steps reflect WR's commitment to creating a safer and more inclusive space for all women passengers and staff, promoting dignity and security in public transport.
