‘We Support Satire, But…’ Eknath Shinde on Kunal Kamra's Remarks

Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde has weighed in on the controversy surrounding comedian Kunal Kamra, stating that while satire is understood, it should have limits and maintain decorum to avoid provoking reactions.

Speaking at a BBC Marathi event, Shinde likened Kamra's jibes to taking a "supari" (contract) to speak against someone. "Freedom of speech exists, we understand satire, but there should be a limit," he said, adding, "If one crosses a certain level, action will lead to reaction."

He further alleged that Kamra had previously made comments against the Supreme Court, the Prime Minister, and industrialists, implying that such remarks were not an exercise of free speech but rather an agenda-driven act.

Take a Poll

Kamra's satirical take on Shinde's political career, delivered through a modified Bollywood song, has sparked a major political storm in Maharashtra. While the comedian has refused to apologize, his remarks have led to protests, with Shiv Sena (Eknath Shinde faction) workers vandalizing the venue where his show was filmed.

Following the incident, Mumbai Police registered an FIR against Kamra. Meanwhile, Shiv Sena functionary Rahul Kanal and 11 others were arrested for the vandalism but were later granted bail by a magistrate's court.
