Vadpe-Majiwada Expansion Project: Thane’s Old Mumbai-Nashik Highway Transformed into 8-Lane Road

Travelling through Thane's busy highways is set to become easier with the completion of the Vadpe-Majiwada expansion project along the Old Mumbai-Nashik Highway. Spanning 23.8 kilometres, this major development will widen the highway into an eight-lane road, with two-lane service roads on either side, according to a Times Now report.

Additionally, ten vehicular underpasses will be constructed to reduce traffic congestion, especially caused by heavy commercial vehicles from Bhiwandi's warehouses. According to officials from the Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC), these underpasses aim to ease the frequent traffic jams that have long troubled commuters.

The project's most notable feature is the ten underpasses, strategically located at key points including Walshin, Sonale, Kharegaon, Yewali Flyover, and others. These underpasses spread over an 8 8-kilometre stretch, are expected to significantly improve traffic flow once completed by May. Furthermore, three major bridges and a flyover will be built, including the Kasheli Creek Bridge (817.5 metres), the Kalwa Creek Bridge (199 metres), and the Vadpe Flyover (320 metres).

The Vadpe-Majiwada expansion project will also boost connectivity with the Samruddhi Mahamarg. This expressway, which stretches 701 kilometres from Igatpuri to Thane, is nearing the completion of its final 76-kilometres stretch. The addition of a 4.2-kilometres spur linking to the under-construction Mumbai-Vadodara Expressway is expected to reduce travel time between Mumbai and Nagpur. This spur, which is over 98 per cent complete, required a challenging six-storey-high slope and controlled blasting. Once fully integrated, the project will greatly enhance travel efficiency across the region.
