The Future of Khanapur-Aatpadi: Suhas Babar Takes the Political Reins
Recognised as one of the most critical and sensitive districts in Maharashtra's political arena, Sangli's political narrative has predominantly revolved around the Congress and the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP). However, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has made significant inroads, and the Shiv Sena, although a latecomer, has also established its presence in the region.
Notable political figures from Sangli include former Chief Minister Vasantdada Patil, former Revenue Minister Rajaram Bapu Patil, and prominent leaders such as Jayant Patil, R.R. Patil, and Patangrao Kadam. Yet, the legacy of Anil Babar, who represented the drought-affected Khanapur-Aatpadi area, stands out as integral to the district's political history.

A Rising Star in Politics
At just 22 years old in 1972, Anil Babar was elected to the Sangli Zilla Parishad. His political journey saw him rise to the position of chairperson of the subject committee in 1981 and later serve as president of the Khanapur Panchayat Samiti from 1982 to 1990. He entered the Maharashtra Legislative Assembly in 1990 and served multiple terms, including a leadership role as president of the Yashwant Cooperative Sugar Factory in 1991.
Babar returned to the Maharashtra Assembly in 1999 and was appointed as a director on the board of the Sangli District Central Bank in 2001. His commitment to public service was evident through his work with the National Heavy Engineering Cooperative Limited from 1999 to 2008. Notably, he re-entered the assembly in 2014 and 2019 on the Shiv Sena ticket.
Championing the Drought-Stricken Region
The Khanapur-Aatpadi-Vita region is known for its severe drought conditions, which have prompted significant migration among residents due to a lack of irrigation facilities. Throughout his career, Anil Babar dedicated himself to bringing water to this parched area, aspiring to channel water from the Krishna River into his taluka. Despite his extensive political experience, Babar faced setbacks, including being overlooked for a ministerial role in Devendra Fadnavis's cabinet in 2014 and again by Uddhav Thackeray in 2019.
However, during the 2022 rebellion led by Eknath Shinde, Babar pledged his support to Shinde, solidifying his status as a key ally. Unfortunately, he recently passed away, leaving behind a legacy of devotion to his constituents. A few days before his death, Shinde visited Khanapur-Aatpadi to honor Babar's memory, promising to support Babar's two sons in their future endeavors.
Paving the Way for Future Generations
Anil Babar's unwavering commitment to combating drought was apparent throughout his career. He advocated for the construction of infrastructure to transport water from the Krishna River, leading to the establishment of the Temboo Project. His visionary approach also extended to road development within his constituency, successfully securing substantial government funding for various road projects.
Babar played a crucial role in numerous developmental initiatives, including funding for a bridge over the Kera River, which has significantly improved access for residents in Vita. He secured a budget for developing tourism facilities and allocated funds for the renovation of local temples, ensuring the preservation of the area's cultural heritage.
As the 2024 assembly elections approach, Eknath Shinde has nominated Suhas Babar, Anil Babar's son, to contest from the Khanapur-Aatpadi constituency. With a strong legacy and the support of various political factions, Suhas is poised to continue his father's commitment to the region.
Shiv Sainiks express confidence that Suhas Babar will uphold the trust placed in him by Eknath Shinde and honor the memory of Anil Babar through dedicated service to the people of Khanapur-Aatpadi.
